Cold vs hot vulcanising

splicing of conveyor Belts by Cold Vulcanising has several advantages over Hot process in jointing Belts which are installed in a system as the former does not require any heavy equipments to be carried to the joint area.

The strength of the joint made in cold process depends on the quality of the materials used, condition of the Belt and the skill of the Technician who makes the splice.

The joint area of any belt will be weak and will have a strength of n-1/n (n=no. of plies). The area required for the joint has to be determined by calculating the shearing strength of the joint to be equal to the strength of the Belt. The adhesion value of the belt plies using a cold vulcanising Adhesive can be easily tested by doing a pull out strength test and multiplying this with the ply area will give the joint strength.

The major disadvantage with cold jointing is it is susceptible to getting opened by hitting with scrappers and cleaners.

To summarise:

Steelcord ... hot splice

Fabric .... cold splice is much simpler and generally a bit stronger than hot splice, but is not so pretty, and can be more easily damaged.
