Training idlers

Posted in: , on 9. Dec. 2004 - 19:01

Hello,

I have another question that I hope you can help me with: Is the reference height of a training idler the same with the corresponding reference height of an idler?

In other words are the training idlers "taller" then regular idlers in order to have better steering of a belt?

Thank you in advance on sharing your thoughts with me.

Best Regards,

Mike

Mike

You are correct a training idler is slightly higher than the regular idlers to help in steering the belt. This is done to ensure load on the idler.

The old 'Prok' catalogue gives centre roll height 3 mm above normal idlers.

Hello,

Increasing the roll height on self aligning idlers is a common practice in order to ensure that the idler is always in contact with the belt. There has also been work done on increasing the friction factor between roll and belt by rubber lagging steel rolls.

Mike

A word of caution. Training idlers should never be installed in any part of a concave vertical curve section unless you can gaurantee contact with the rolls at all times.

Dear Mr. Mike,

If particular idler is taller than general belt line, then it will result into more load on that particular idler. So, such adjustment if any, should be done with caution.

Three mm that you are referring is not unusual misalignment value in vertical plane, as even general tolerance in a stinger stand framework would have tolerances in nearby range for average conveyors.

Height Of A Training Idler

Posted on 22. Dec. 2004 - 12:01

Dear Mr. Mike,

I have seen that there is difference of 5 to 10mm in elevation during erection of idler. So the height of training idler with respect to other is insignificant.

As advised by Derek earlier we would normally suggest that training idlers are positioned above normal idlers.

You should however consider the deviation load that this may apply to the idler to ensure it is maintained within acceptable limits. A deviation of 5mm -10mm on a carry idler is generally outside normal tolerances and this may require a heavier duty roller to be selected.
