The type of gate is chosen considering the function, price and space available. In general, flap gates are economical and would require less space. The travelling type of flow deflector can be made very strong with very thick liners and so on. They would be expensive and may need somewhat more space. This type of arrangement is used if the material handled is very lumpy, heavy, tough, abrasive and if one is prepared to pay for the price.

Preferred Type Of Divertor Gate
Dear all,
I have noted comments of Mr. Mulani for Traveling Gates.
Regarding, bucket type gate, the construction of bucket gate is quite similar to Flap gate. In bucket type gate the surface where the incoming material will be hitting directly, is missing. Also the connecting shaft that falls inside the material stream, is also not present.
In bucket gate, we can use flange-mounted bearings, which remain outside the gate, hence maintenance will be easy.
Considering the above merits, don't you suggest that bucket gates shall be preferred wherever flap gates are provided?
I find bucket gate more similar to Travelling Gate, in which instead of linear motion of chutes we have revolving motion.
Hence, in bucket gate, we have merits of both - Flap gate for simplicity and Travelling gate - for no direct contact with material stream.
I am asking this question, as we do not have any bucket gate in our plant, to compare the performance of Flap gate and Bucket gate.
Please opine.

One major point I missed for bucket gates, is the reduction in Fines Generation. Since there is no hitting surface for material stream.

Bucket (or arc) gates are OK for material which can be used for rockbox style chute designs - the material will rill inside the arc type gate to the outlet.
Flap gates can be used for 1, 2 or 3 outlets, arc gates can not unless stacked accordingly.
A arc gate will be less prone to jamming with material getting between the sidewalls. Flap gates can have this problem but can be designed to avoid this......if a hard rock gets jammed between the wall of the housing and the moving part > it will jam and be very hard to move..
Travelling gates are rarely seen and more costly.

Diverter Gate
What is the preffered type.
Here is my bit of wisdom.
I would preffer a diverter gate that can operate with a static column, you never know when you will need it, and when you do it will be in the worst sircumstances. Murfy's law
A diverter gate that has no leacks . I do not like to clean messes.
A diverter gate with low torque requirements. one that can be operated by hand if required. Pistons fail every so often, and during maintenance you normally shutt down the hidraulic power.
One that doesen't freeze up. One that does not need sledge hammer motivation. You swead a lot when using the hammer, an the equipment loooka bad with pot marks.
and a diverter gate that doesn't wear out. attaching or welding wear plates is hard, This is a tough one but with rock boxes can be done ,
If you can have it all ( letter to santa) then you have a preffered diverter gate.
Other wise you have to make tradeoffs.

Bucket Gates
By the way i do preffer bucket diverters .
they can meet my letter to santa.
I like them with wide clearances to reduce torque and overlapping lips to eliminate leacks.

Travelling Gates
I've looked for information on travelling gates, and have found nothing. It sounds like the perfect piece of equipment for my problem. However, i was wondering if theres a manufacturer that i can't find. I would appriciate any help with this subject.

Flap type diverter gates are preferred. However, travelling gates are provided where discharge height limitations are there. Further, if it is needed to discharge in multiple places, travelling gates are to be used.
