Conveyor Minimun Length

Good morning,

I was consulting a manual Fenner-Dunlop for the manufacture of a conveyor for handling coal, and the manual tells me that the minimum length of the conveyor must be 5.0 meters between centers of shaft of drums.

What are the problems in conveyor belt length less than 5.0 meters?

I appreciate your response,

Marcos Suarez

I didn't realise Fenner were so rash. If you add the transition lengths to the skirt length requirement I suspect the minimum figure will always exceed 5m for most practical applications. Take up length will be quite short...and coming up...the length of the splice working space..if the belt is spliced in situ ...must be considered. The situation is similar to vehicle sizing. They all need 4 wheels, windows and doors etc.

You could probably get away with less depending on material and speeds etc. I take it we're talking horizontal feeder type things.

There are many belts less than 5 m length when looking at belt feeders and short flat lateral transfers with side skirts.

Like above said, not with troughing rollers.

Curious. What maunal are you consulting? I may be wrong, but have never seen that in our product literature, etc.

Mr Buddy,

It is no exactly a Manual, it is a Software for the Calculation of the Conveyor Belt.

This software is in the next web page: http://www.dunlop.com.ar/esp/cintastransp.asp

This software do not accept this length, the lenght must be above 5 m. It is say it

Hoping this finds you well. However, it needs to be stated that the info you posted regarding Fenner Dunlop is not correct. It could easily be mistaken as the site you referenced was Dunlop Argentina and has no affiliation to Fenner Dunlop whatsoever. The Dunlop logo is quite common and used world-wide. But Dunlop Argentina is not one of our companies. Further, we use a far different and more advanced moseling system to determine belt spec. If you would like, I can put you in contact with a local rep. that can assist you. Hope this is helpful.

Dear Marcsua,

Minimum length of conveyor will depend upon belt width, transition length at tail end & head end and feed zone length.

Suppose if you have got a 1000 mm wide belt conveyor, and say 30% troughing angle, it has one feed point having skirt board length about 2.5 m, then minimum length will be something like this (constructionally) :

Suppose transition length from flat to trough or trough to flat is say 1.5 m

So conveyor length will be 1.5 m + skirt board length 2.5 m + 1.5 m = 5.5 m minimum.

However if the belt is 2000 mm wide, then minimum length would be quite more.

Also, if you have flat belt conveyor, the transition zone will be absent but will add the pulley diameters at the ends.

So, there is no rule about the minimum length of a conveyor. You have to make a layout for specific case to see the result.

Also, in such short conveyor, one will have to keep belt speed appropriate to the application.
