BELT SCRAPERS - BEST TYPE & why?

Posted in: , on 27. Dec. 2004 - 00:03

To the Experts........HELP.

In my travels.........this topic comes up very frequently and the answers are as variable as the customers asking the question.

I have seen very complex belt scraper designs, very simple designs, homemade designs.....and non at all. There seems to be many companies offering many concepts and it is a big market......

Do we use different belt scrapers if cold or hot vulcanized or metal fasteners..........WHO or what is best and why?

THANKYOU.......George Baker

Dear Mr. George Baker,

I had been in application engineering for very long time and I used to also face the same confusing situation, what you are mentioning. In application engineering, we have to analyze and conclude the issue for specific decision because there is no waiting period for the decision. I have analyzed various types of scrapers and already have my opinion and conclusions, but I would not like to put it on this on forum.

Let every manufacturer have his business and there are buyers who have varied kind of preferences i.e. giving stress on particular aspect / feature from one buyer to another buyer. So, there is a scope for all types of scrapers to be in the market. It is also good from the consumer point of view because it gives varied choice. So, enjoy the situation.

Scrapers

Your question is asked by all of us.

I have never been able to say 1 brand is better overall than another.

I have seen 1 brand fail on a site and another succeed.

The question of what do we use given say clips or hot/cold splice is a bit easier.

Never use tungsten blades on clips.

Always ask “which is the sacrificial element”. The answer should always be the scraper.

If someone sells a blade that does not wear then some thing will be giving and the other item is the belt.

The question of which is best. I feel none are. They all need to improve. The best results I have seen are sites who try them all and usually have a combination of makes.

Personally, I use Stainless Steel assemblies with airbag style tensioning. I have found that this gives me the best constant force on the blades. Primary I use Poly type blades manufacture does not matter there are so many knockoffs on the market.

Secondary I like on belts with splices tungsten blades on poly base . Tertiary I like a U type blade which can be poly or tungsten.

I like wet cleaning with a spray bar directed to the underside of the primary.

I also have a contractor inspect during operation and adjust on maintenance day.

Scrapers

Sear Sir,

There as you have said many types of scrapers in the market and some work more effectively than others. When considering what type to purchase you should consider the following:

Are the blades independently loaded to allow for differential wear across the belt (centre blades wear faster than the outside blades)

Condition of the belt to select blade type

Method of adjustment

Ease of maintenance

Initially scrapers when installed will work for a period of time, however, the efficiency and life is dependent on the servicing. No scraper is a set and forget item.

Mr. Baker,

Best is a relative term. Type of scraper to be use defends upon mainly the type of material being handle. In a broad sence SPRUNG TYPE MULTIPLE BLADE is very much usefull for all type of application because it serves the purpose for which is being intended.
