L.t. Drive Arrangement For Stacker Reclaimer Family

There is a controversy over use of shaft mounted geared motor in built brake (conical /disc type) and conventional shaft mounted gear box fitted weth bracket to accomodate shoe brake over brake drum coupling and electric motor. Now, I like to get a comparision from maintainace aspect as well as cost.

I would be grateful if any anybody throw a light on the debate.

Dear Mr. Chanda,

Both are good. But in case of any problem in geared motor, in which department you will approache for repair/maintenance. If you go to mechanical dept. they will request you to approach in the electrical & visa, vice.

Maintennce-wise geared motor is little problematic.

Regards.

Hello,

The brake not integral to gear unit (speed reduction portion / other portion of drive) may be for following reasons:

1) Freedom to choose brake type and specifications independent of gear unit.

2) Brake being separate and independent, it would be easy for access and maintenance.

Suggest you may discuss with manufacturer of stacker, reclaimer to know about the reasons.

Somebody did come back: so here goes.

What controversy?

An integral unit is always preferable. Disconnect the motor wiring; remove the flange bolts or torque arm and take your puller and catch the 3.5-5.5kW unit as it comes clear. Now fit the spare unit that you must have in stores as part of your 2% spares holding. With the motor withdrawn make sure the rotation is right. Then re-insert the motor and away you go.

This way the unit can be repaired properly in the workshop and the downtime is drastically reduced. There is no point in discussing this with a manufacturer who would prefer his clumsy, in-house, bracket fabrication.
