Air swept ball mills are also used in the steel industry esp. pellet plants where co-grinding of limestone/dolomite and coke is done.

The other auxilliary equipments required for this are -

hot air generator (for feed drying), process fans, air classifier, product cyclone, product dust collection by bag filters+suction fan combination, air slides+blower for recirculating oversize into ball mill, air lock valves, vent dampers, screw conveyors, intermediate piping, etc.

Such pneumatic handling reduces handling losses and emissions. Also, less space is required for installation of closed circuit grinding.

This process is used too for drying and grinding coal at power stations.

An overview is in a brochure of FLSmidth "Coalgrindingplants.PDF" , at their site.

In this case, hot air velocity inside the tube must be around 1 m/s, in order to swept the fines and left coarser particles.
