Laurentian University is located in Sudbury, at the heart of Ontario’s hard-rock mining industry. Laurentian is undertaking a major initiative to build on and strengthen its research and development contributions to the mining industry. Part of this initiative involved the creation of the Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO). The focus of this not-for-profit corporation is the development and translation of research knowledge into practical technology that supports sustainable mining practices and economic diversification.
MIRARCO – THE CENTRE FOR MINING TECHNOLOGY
The Centre for Mining Technology (CMT) has been opened to introduce and expand on emerging technologies in mining applications. The main purpose of MIRARCO’s CMT is to provide Applied Research and Development capabilities in close collaboration and co-operation amongst Mining Companies, Mining Equipment Manufacturers and Industries (Knowledge providers) who have the know-how of applicable technologies.
MIRARCO is embarking on a major initiative to introduce Applied Research Technology to the Mining industry to establish ‘best practice’ material flow processes and procedures in a harsh environment. The research team plans to employ process and simulation models to suggest how best to operate and coordinate the activities within an ore manufacturing plant and to identify and to identify and design tools for specific shift-by-shift planning and decision making.
THE POSITION
The Mines Operations Research Engineer will be part of the team implementing the CMT strategy in assisting mines to improve their ore production processes. The ideal candidate will have or be completing a graduate degree (M.Sc or Ph.D: preferably in Engineering) specializing in systems engineering, management sciences or manufacturing plant engineering with emphasis on planning and scheduling: logistics of supply chain management: systems integration, supply chain co-ordination in a decentralized environment: systems integration and performance evaluation related to a mining operating environment. Experience in development and application of tools and techniques for use in the management of integrated manufacturing and logistics systems, and the creation of new knowledge about the design, implementation, operation and control of these systems will be a definite asset. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work at mines in a hands-on manner with variety of clients are essential. The applicant is also expected to have outstanding computing skills and be knowledgeable with relevant software packages.
