CEMA publishes new edition of “The CEMA Book”

Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials, Sixth Edition

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) has just published a new edition of “the CEMA Book,” Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials. This new edition—sixth in the series –was released in April, 2005.

Since its first edition in 1966, Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials has been the “Bible” of belt conveying. Each edition has included information on belt conveyor application, engineering, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. This book is valuable to operations and management personnel in all industries that rely on belt conveyors.

The new “CEMA Book” was developed by a committee of CEMA bulk handling members. Todd Swinderman, CEO and Chief Technology Officer of Martin Engineering served as committee chair. In that role, he proved the driving force behind starting and finishing the project.

“We had three goals in completing CEMA Six,” Swinderman notes. “These were: to improve the method of power calculation, to develop a format compatible with computer engineering, and update every chapter to emphasize conveyors that are well-designed, economical and safe to operate.”

The new 600 page Sixth Edition contains over 600 equations, figures and tables, most of which are new. Readers will see changes including two completely new chapters: Chapter 15 Takeups, and Chapter 16 Advanced Technology.

Other significant changes include: updated methods to calculate the power required to drive a conveyor, a discussion of the importance of proper design to reduce a conveyor’s cost of ownership, and a review of accessories to improve conveyor performance.

Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials Sixth Edition is available from the CEMA web site. Single copies cost $300 USD plus shipping.
