The prelude of the ceremony was a lecture on the chair’s history as well as current and future research priorities held by the current owner Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wi.-Ing. Willibald A. Günthner. Then Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Rudolf Schilling, Vice President of the Technische Universität München, presented the university’s greetings on the 100th anniversary’s occasion. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karl-Heinz Wehking of the Universität Stuttgart spoke as President of the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für technische Logistik (WGTL) about the relevance of scientific networks in general and specifically in the technical logistics. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Raimund Klinkner, chairman of Bundesvere-inigung Logistik (BVL) and CEO of Knorr-Bremse AG explained what science and industry can learn from each other and how well the two complement. Afterwards Dr.-Ing. Joachim Miebach, chairman of the VDI-FML and chairman of the Advisory Board Miebach Logistik Holding GmbH, discussed the importance of patronage innovation in the current period. Dipl.-Ing. Christoph Hahn-Woernle, spokesman for the Forum Intralogistik/VDMA and manager of the viastore systems GmbH gave a brief historical outline of the development of the materials handling technology towards intra-logistics and the associated challenges and opportunities. In his lecture Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. mult. Dr. E.h. mult. Joachim Milberg, President of the acatech e.V. and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of BMW AG, demonstrated the conditions for sustainable growth through innovation. Regarding the international context, in Germany has to be a "climate change" in order to remain innovative in the future. The lectures were musically framed by the classic sounds of the brass trio “Blattgold”.
Following the lectures, the visitors had the chance of leading interesting conversations and getting information about current research projects from the employees at a champagne reception in the chair’s experimental hall.
The evening program’s highlight was the introduction of the newly published book "Technische Innovationen für die Logistik" after the dinner banquet. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Miebach welcomed the publisher Wolfgang Huss and both authors - Dipl.-Ing. Klaus Heptner und Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wi-Ing. Willibald A. Günthner - on stage to present the book’s origination and the content’s cornerstones. The evening event was framed by the jazz sounds of the “Akademische Swingtett”.

The evening ended at the well attended lounge in the chair’s atrium. The relaxed at-mosphere allowed for continuing the discussions, refreshing common memories and establishing new contacts.

In the course of a big ceremony, the Lehrstuhl für Fördertechnik Materialfluss Logistik of the Technische Universität München celebrated its 100th anniversary. More than 300 representatives from industry, research and development associations as well as former and current employees attended this event on 28th September 2007 in the buildings of the faculty for mechanical engineering in Garching near Munich.
Today's Lehrstuhl für Fördertechnik Materialfluss Logistik, also known by its acronym “fml”, was founded in 1907 as Lehrstuhl für Hebezeuge und Förderanlagen and headed by Prof. Rudolf Krell as the first professor in ordinary. At that time research focused on construction of cranes and subjects of materials engineering and manufacturing technology.
In 1935 Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Erich vom Ende took over the chair and moved the spheres of work in the direction of materials science and mechanical elements. The missing differentiation to other chairs was neither intended nor necessary and adapted to the needs of the time. After the confusion caused by the Second World War, science and research could go regulated ways starting 1950 and for the next 24 years, Prof. Dr. Fritz Dreher was professor at the renamed Lehrstuhl und Institut für Förderwesen. In research, the chair was devoted increasingly to rotating tower cranes and the wire-rope testing, but also gear wheels and gearings again. Already at that time, the research on calculation and measurement of cranes began, which has been continued until today.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Siegfried Böttcher took over the chair and institute in 1974. Under his leadership, the research on bulk materials handling, cablecars and cranes was intensified. The chair also addressed the mathematical description of problems in all areas.
In 1994 Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wi.-Ing. Willibald A. Günthner took over the chair and gave it the more modern name Lehrstuhl für Fördertechnik Materialfluss Logistik. The spheres of work now include calculation and dimensioning methods, digital tools and simulation, automation and identification as well as methods and concepts. The focus of research lies in many areas of logistics and material flow systems, but also in materials handling. During this period, several generations of scientific and non-scientific staff cooperated in the training of over 40000 students and more than 100 doctoral candidates.
