TAIM WESER OBTAINS OHSAS 18001:2007 CERTIFICATION

AN INDICATION OF THE COMPANY’S COMMITMENT TO HEALTH AND SAFETY

TAIM WESER has made occupational health and safety one of its top priorities. For this reason, the company has decided to implement an Occupational Health and Safety Management System based on the requirements of the OHSAS 18001:2007 standard.

In line with the company policy of continuous improvement, TAIM WESER has achieved OHSAS 18001:2007 certification for Occupational Health and Safety. This OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) certification establishes a series of requirements related to health and safety in the workplace. It is oriented towards improving results in both of these areas and enables companies to exercise greater control in the prevention of occupational risks by reducing and even eliminating the hazards. Prepared by specialized agencies and certified by international standardization organizations, the standard also promotes the information, consultation, balanced participation and training of workers in risk prevention measures.

BUREAU VERITAS Certification has been chosen to perform the audit that verifies that TAIM WESER is in compliance with the necessary conditions to obtain OHSAS 18001:2007 certification. This auditor is the leading private certification agency in Spain and one of the most reputable and experienced organizations in the world. Their accreditation of Environmental, Quality and Risk Management systems certifies that the plant is managed in accordance with Quality, Environmental and Occupational Safety standards that go beyond the requirements of current EU and Spanish regulations.

Management Systems to ensure smooth Operations

TAIM WESER is dedicated to providing advanced solutions in five continents to optimize industrial processes. In this respect, it is equally important that the company ensures that operations are carried out following criteria of sustainability and respect for the environment. For this purpose, the TAIM WESER management system has been certified according to the international standards; ISO 9001 (since 1996) and ISO 14001 (since 2001), which specify the requirements for Quality and Environmental Management Systems, respectively. The area of Occupational Health and Safety has been included in the Quality and Environment Department as a third activity, on a par with the previous activities.

The nature of the activities carried out by TAIM WESER makes it imperative to implement a system that ensures impeccable health and safety management. According to Rosa Pales, Quality, Environment and Safety Manager, "the extensive prior experience and expertise in the fields of Quality and the Environment, support from management and the awareness of employees and supervisors" have been fundamental in the smooth implementation of the new health and safety management system.

Tools needed to implement effective Health and Safety Management

These principles are not applied exclusively at the Zaragoza facilities. The international scope of TAIM WESER, along with the importance of health and safety standards in the industrial sector due to the potential hazards, are factors which motivate workers to maintain the same levels of adherence to standards and preventive measures in carrying out their duties. In addition, a computer application (Acces CST), developed by the TAIM WESER IT Department, is also used to maintain control of subcontractor access.

Ignacio Pelegrn, Head of Health and Safety at TAIM WESER and in charge of supervising compliance with the requirements necessary to achieve the desired results, points out “we have two people with positions related specifically to safety surveillance and control: an on-site Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator and a plant Safety Supervisor”. The first is responsible for managing preventive measures for on-site assembly, while the second is in charge of supervising compliance with preventive measures at the TAIM WESER production plant (Polgono La Cartuja Baja).

In addition, department heads and production managers have been made aware of the importance of ensuring that the workers under their supervision comply with safety standards, both in the factory, as well as at assembly and in subcontracted facilities. In turn, employees attend awareness training sessions.

Extensive Safety Protocols for greater Protection

TAIM WESER follows specific protocols at the plant and during assembly, as these activities could have a negative impact on the environment if not managed properly. It should be taken into account that these are long-term projects which, due to their nature, can entail risks to workers. Mr. Pelegrn explains “once the hazards associated with the work performed at TAIM WESER have been identified, and the risks evaluated, the company establishes a series of operational controls”.

If the project specifications make it is necessary to implement special controls at the factory, this is stated on the Contract Requirements Form (IRC). The next step is to plan and implement all additional operational controls.

With respect to assembly, the potential hazards for each project are set forth in the Safety and Hygiene Plan. Prior to the start of the assembly process for each order, the OHS Coordinator for Assembly will liaise with the client's Health and Safety Department to determine the type of service to be provided (on-site or coordination of activities). Depending on the type of service and in what capacity TAIM WESER is acting, the activities are carried out in accordance with either Royal Decree 1627 or Royal Decree 171.
