Ploughed Debris Sidelined

Posted in: , on 10. Dec. 2011 - 10:46

Is there any guidance for the containment of debris which is bounced off those ploughs fitted over GTU pulleys?

A lump carried along the bottom strand until it falls over the first bend pulley will be moving at quite a speed even before there is any gravitational acceleration. When the lump eventually engages the plough it can be projected beyond the confines of the safety cage which should exist under the counterweight travel envelope. It would still have a way to speed up before falling onto personnel below.

Should the plough be fitted with cheek plates to confine the debris? (I just noticed the absence of cheek plates in the Spec in front of me and recognised the need for expert opinion.)

Install a conveyor belt cleaner (s) prior to the first bend pulley?

Controlled Deflection

proposed procedure:

1 some convenient distance BEFORE 1st bend pulley: take the lower belt strand to flat (if troughed)

2 still sufficiently far BEFORE 1st bend pulley: install single straight deflector beam (w. rubber lip) AT convenient ANGLE to belt CL

3 install hood / recipient / chute over zone of deflected debris --> collect or dispose

remarks:

#3 will define space & position requirements

lesser angle of deflector beam --> lesser energy when projected but higher risk of damage

To be continued / improved.
