MacGREGOR: Leading through Innovation

One of the most effective ways for a company to ride recessional waves in a difficult economic climate is to focus on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of its customers’ operations through innovation, both in terms of service and technology.

MacGREGOR – part of Cargotec Corporation – has had a long-standing tradition of supplying innovative technology and service solutions for marine cargo-handling and offshore load-handling needs. Continuous development work ensures that MacGREGOR is able to offer refined solutions that meet the expanding requirements of the markets with a solid understanding of customers’ businesses.

To meet growing environmental concerns, MacGREGOR has developed a wide range of electrically-driven cargo-handling equipment, which has been proven in operation. Next year for example, the company will complete a contract for Japanese shipyard Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co Ltd that will see the first pure car/truck carriers fitted with a complete set of electrically-driven RoRo equipment, totally eliminating the use of hydraulic oil in the operating system (see separate item).

For the offshore market, MacGREGOR is marketing a host of innovative products that not only improve efficiency and safety, but also outperform currently available equipment. These include:

• An ultra-deepwater lifting system using fibre-rope technology that will enable standard MacGREGOR offshore cranes to reach significantly deeper depths than previously possible using a traditional system (see separate item)

• A hopper and blow pump bulk handling system for offshore supply vessels that can achieve capacity increases of up to 75 per cent compared with a conventional bulk tank set-up

• Delivering the world’s first subsea knuckle-jib crane equipped with a system for multi-component fibre rope handling to Norwegian offshore support specialist Havila Shipping for its latest delivery, Havila Phoenix

• A new overhead-mounted telescoping launch-and-recovery system that uses a docking head carried on an overhead telescoping rail mounted in the hangar, which increases available space around the remotely-operated vehicle

• A remotely-controlled deck handling manipulator systems (DHMS), which is designed to minimise exposure to the hazardous working environment on the aft deck

• Hydraulically and electrically-driven anchor-handling towing winches (AHTW) with pulling powers of between 300 tonnes and 600 tonnes.

At the same time, MacGREGOR has also met a growing service need. As well as acquiring several companies that support its network of offshore customers, integrating offshore equipment service into MacGREGOR’s existing global service network makes competent service and spare parts logistics available to customers wherever their ships are, thus assuring uninterrupted equipment performance.
