OUTOTEC CFD APPOINTMENT OPTIMISES THICKENER DESIGN AND EFFICIENCIES
A chemical engineer at the forefront of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in mineral processing, Dr. Alex Heath, has been appointed Principal Research Engineer, CFD and Process Modelling, for Outotec’s thickener technology development group.
His experience in using CFD engineering technologies to optimise the design and function of thickeners advances the industry’s understanding of thickener flow patterns to a new benchmark for the future, says Outotec’s Global Technology Manager for Thickening, Richard Triglavcanin.
Outotec extended its in-house leadership in thickener CFD capability by recruiting Dr Heath, drawing on his abilities as a CFD modeller with 10 years experience in the AMIRA P266 research project “Improving Thickener Technology”. AMIRA P266 is supported by many of Australia’s major mining and mining supply companies, attracting millions of dollars in investment.
CFD allows proposed thickener designs to be truly optimised for individual duties, with benefits including enhanced mixing, energy dissipation, flocculation, solids distribution and shear rates, says Mr Triglavcanin, whose company has also invested in the latest StarCD parallel processing software and multi-processor hardware to help clients capitalise on the many gains available through CFD.
Dr Heath holds a PhD (Chemical Engineering) from Murdoch University, a BsC (Chemistry) First Class Honours from Curtin University and has 12 years experience in the Australian mineral processing industry, including senior research and development positions with the CSIRO. He is based in Perth, and reports directly to Mr Richard Triglavcanin.
