New Specialist for Project Loads and Heavy Cargo Launches Services – Ralf Maehmel Founds BARIS

Berlin, 4 May 2009 – BARIS Schifffahrtsgesellschaft mbH began business operations on 1 May 2009 after its entry in the Commercial Register had been formally completed. The company is managed by its founder and majority shareholder Ralf Maehmel, who has been able to gain a wealth of experience in shipping and project logistics operations during his previous periods of employment at Deutsche Seereederei, Deutsche Binnenreederei and Rhenus PartnerShip. The other partners are the established shipping companies Imperial Reederei GmbH based in Duisburg and Reederei Ed Line GmbH in Berlin. Using the expertise of the three partners, BARIS will primarily focus on using inland waterways and coastal waters in an intelligent fashion in order to transport heavy and bulk volume consignments.

“We are all confident that BARIS will quickly become an established name on the European market, particularly as we have good network connections overseas. We have the experience, the technical expertise and we understand our customers’ needs. As architects of a modern and complete logistics process, we will exploit the strengths of each individual mode of transport. And that is precisely the reason why shipping will always play a special role for us. Provided that access to water is guaranteed, inland waterway solutions in this field are simple and straightforward. Inland waterway vessels are capable of shipping heavier loads, they do not have to cope with traffic jams, there are fewer restrictions on inland waterways and these services are more environmentally sound than any other means of transport. We have already landed our first jobs and will soon be taking to the waters with them,” says Ralf Maehmel, Managing Partner at BARIS.

The company’s business model is based on three mainstays: developing concepts for logistics operations for project loads, the forwarding business for heavy consignments and plant using combined means of transport and operating shipping services for special tonnage. Large volume and extra heavy capital equipment will be warehoused and transported on behalf of the export-oriented German plant construction sector in future. This includes items like turbines, transformers, generators and wind power plant. But the project logistics services provided by BARIS are also ideally tuned to handle the floating assembly of hydraulic engineering structures, transport ship segments and provide infrastructure for major events held on water.
