ESD GmbH EKATO Sicherheits- und Dichtungstechnik:

Automatic supply system for mechanical seals

Fully automatic supply of several mechanical seals with seal liquid / optimized maintenance and plant availability

Schopfheim, March 2009. During ACHEMA 2009, ESD GmbH EKATO Sicherheits- und Dichtungstechnik will introduce their intelligent alternative for the supply of mechanical seals. The so-called automatic supply system AVS is already being used successfully in many different applications. All critical parameters for the mechanical seal can be automatically and continuously monitored using modularly built systems. This includes the temperatures and pressures in the individual components of the unit as well as the filling levels of the required cooling and seal liquids and their flow rates. Operating errors, maintenance requirements and maintenance costs can be reduced in equal measure. Doing so, the lifetime of the seals can be increased and plant availability maximized.

Important function of the mechanical seal

Mechanical seals are regarded as process components that usually do not attract much attention. For the most part the plant operator first takes notice of them when they fail. The consequences range from plant shutdowns with high financial losses to leakages of hazardous products and potential legal prosecution. Double-acting fluid lubricated mechanical seals with two pairs of seal rings are typically used for processes with pressures or when handling hazardous media. In operation a seal chamber is created between the seal pairs and the wall of the seal housing. The seal liquid within lubricates the seal faces and removes the process temperature and the frictional heat from the seal rings. Seal rings overheat if insufficiently supplied with seal liquid and the lubricating film breaks down. Seal wear significantly increases, the seal faces are damaged and the seal liquids leaks from the chamber. A safe handling of dangerous substances is no longer guaranteed. A consistent supply of the mechanical seal with seal liquid is an essential aspect for the lifetime of the mechanical seal.

Reducing extensive maintenance

Under normal operating conditions the operational safety of mechanical seals is ensured by professional maintenance at regular intervals. The filling level of the seal liquid must be continuously monitored and topped up if necessary, the leakage must be controlled and the function of additional devices such as flushing or cooling devices should be checked on a regular basis. These activities must be reliably performed by qualified operating personnel in certain circumstances several times a day. Any malfunction must be corrected immediately by appropriate measures. According to experience with professional mechanical seal maintenance, it is possible to avoid early breakdowns in 35 % of the cases, and breakdowns due to long time wear in 45 % of the cases.

The central supply systems of EKATO ESD can take over the responsibilities of operating personnel – from monitoring of process parameters to switching over to emergency operation. Two different concepts for supply systems have been established on the market: circulation systems (flow through systems) in which the seal liquid circulates through a central seal supply vessel into the individual mechanical seals and the so-called dead-end-systems where each mechanical seal has its own storage vessel. When it comes to choosing a suitable system, EKATO ESD – along with their experienced engineers - are available and ready to engineer a cost-effective, if necessary tailor made, solution taking the specific requirements into consideration.

All from one source

The automatic supply systems of EKATO ESD are composed of standardized modules that guarantee very quick and cost-effective engineering. Without question, customer specific requirements with respect to national and international standards are adhered to and implemented. Customer specific requirements for seals with the most diverse process-oriented equipment such as pumps, agitators, dryers or vaporizers can be accurately fulfilled in the shortest time. P&IDs, instrument lists, functional descriptions, logic diagrams and, if necessary, circuit plans all belong to the scope of supply which permit a quick implementation into existing process control systems. If desired, customer specified control units can be delivered at the same time.
