On the basis of imported technologies, Linc Energy has optimized the production flow, built larger facilities and developed new generation activators to create its own technologies, "There are no impassable obstacles in developing technologies for converting coal into oil, but the effect of such technologies should be tested with small trial operations because they cost much money and call for sound risk-control abilities. ■

Previously there are no established commercial Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) plants operating in Australia, there are a number being evaluated. Conventional coal-to-liquids projects involve mining the coal, gasifying it and then converting the gas to a liquid fuel. Some Australian projects being considered are investigating the possibility of side-stepping the costs of mining the coal by igniting underground coal seems and extracting the gas for processing. Others are based on mining coal prior to gasification.

Coal to Liquids Plant
A Coal to liquids plant consists of three main processes:
Syngas Production: this process converts a solid, liquid or gas feedstock (usually natural gas) into hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
UCG syngas is already a mix of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, therefore this first process does not apply to Linc Energy.
Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) Synthesis: it is the heart of the process. The syngas is converted into liquid hydrocarbons, through a catalytic reaction using cobalt as catalyst. The syngas reacts with the cobalt, joining together simpler hydrocarbon chains contained in the gas, to create a longer liquid hydrocarbon chain (syncrude).
Refining: the liquid hydrocarbon is then filtered and refined to produce the end product fuels: LPG, Naphtha, Jet fuel and Diesel.
These end products are essentially free of sulphur, olefins, metals, alcohols and aromatics. CTL liquid fuels are superior to conventional refinery fuels. ■
