Pneumatic classification

We have an idea to use the suction air (20,000 m3/hr) through our rotary dryer (5 m long 1.4 m in diameter) to suck out most of the minus 100 microns of the feed to the dryer. That is to use it as aclassifier. The material fed is 15 Tons per hour limestone with 40% minus 100 microns (to be sucked as much as possible ), 40% 100-800 microns and 20% plus 800-3000 microns (as much as possible not to be sucked ).

Put aside the drying process in the dryer and the transport of the material after exiting the dryer, Can that be done?

What is the minimum air velocity needed in the dryer?

The velocity of air in drier is rather low - about 3.6m/sec. It is not sufficient to lift allthe -11mesh powder.

You can consider doing pnumatic classification when material is discharged from the dryerby introducing additional air stream and collecting fines in a dust collector hopper.

Thank you Vinayak Sathe.

Only the minus 100 microns (140 mesh) has to exit the drier by pneumatic conveying and be collected by the filter. The rest coarser material will be colected by gravity at the screw conveyor at the driers outlet.

Could it work?

What is the minimum air velocity needed inside the drier taking into account that the material in the drier is falling down from top to bottom all the time interfering with the -100 microns suction.

You may need a static classifier at the discharge end of drier to get a classification of - 100 micron product. The classification will not be very precise, but result may be acceptable to you.

I shall send you some data on systems which may work for you.
