Hi

I would like to know the following regarding Bulk cement storage:

1- Can I fined steel cement silo 20000 ton?

2- if yes would the cost be the same as the concrete silo?

3- proformance wise are the steel same as the concrete?

4- the space we have availble for bulk storge is 1000 sq meter, what would be the max storage we can get out of this space?

Sulaiman,

What is the bulk density of your cement - I'm guessing about 1.5 ton/m3. You would need about 14,000 m3.

Your floor area looks like 30 m diameter. You would need about 20 m height - which is about 5 storeys.

If you build this in concrete you are probably looking at sliding the formwork, and using post-stressing. One was build in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1980 to hold 30,000 t - see Bulk Solids Handling Vol 1, No 4, Dec 1981 and Recommended practice for design of concrete silos ACI 313-77 American Concrete Institute 1977

There are many bulk steel silos of this size, many of which contain cement. It is difficult for me in Australia to say what your costs will be in Kuwait. You should talk to a construction company.

The economic cross-over (at least in the US) is about 3,000-5,000 tons. Steel is economic in "small" bulk storages. From 3,000 to 10,000, silos and domes compete. Above 10,000 tons, domes are the most competitive. Many cement storage examples around 100,000 tons exist at our website.

You should find published articles there on the stated costs above.

By the way, most silos require deep foundations, where domes rarely do. The stored mass is near the earth, rather than up in the air, where uplift can occur on foundation systems.

Small storage systems cost about $600 US / stored ton, large systems < $200 US per stored ton.

Dear Sulaiman,Slamalykum

We would like to bring to your notice that our company-Libran Engineering& Services are in the field of providing detailed feasibility study for CEMENT STORAGE AND DESPATCH TERMINALS

We have already done similar type of study recently for one of the biggest groups in Kuwait where we have given them the following services---

Detailed feasibility study for20,000 t and 45,000 T Cement storage and 5 mtpa despatch terminal.

We have following suggestions---

1. The maximum capacity you can go in steel silos is -3000 to 4000 t.

2.Concrete silos(cylindrical) you can go to 40,000 t

3. Dome silo you can go up to 90,000-1,00,000 t

We will provide you the the detailed costing, lay out for the terminal, list of best vendors for all the three types storage sysytems as mentioned above.

We have exposure of designing more then 30 such systems in India and throughout the world.

Dear Sir

Thank you for the interest you have shown in Permastore tanks.

Permastore are water and wastewater tank and silo specialists.

Unfortunately we are unable to offer a tank suitable to store cement.

However should you require a quotation in the future for water or wastewater tanks, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards

Steel Or Concrete Cement Silos

Dear Sir

In order to give you an accurate answer to your questions we need more information like the soil conditions, the mechanical discharge needed, the location of the silo…

But as a guideline we could tell:

1.Yes it is possible to build silos with that capacity in steel but it is not really economic. It would be better to build smaller silos connected with suitable conveying systems forming a silo battery as it is common in terminals at ports. We recommend though a reinforced concrete silo with e.g. 16 to 18 m diameter and about 60 m height. It is also possible to build such silos without post-stressing. It depends also of the lifetime of the silo aimed to. A pre-fabricated structure could also be feasible in order to gain time and keep up high quality.

2.As the colleagues mentioned the costs of the steel silo with this size is normally higher than that of concrete unless you build many smaller silos of steel to obtain the same storage capacity.

3. The performance depends very much on the outlet design of the silo, the wall friction and definitely the storage material. There are many possibilities to design the outlet of the silo. The eccentricity of the outlet has great effect on the silo loading and therefore on design and costs. We recommend for cement silos the concrete solution because they are not very sensitive to eccentric loading, suction (under-pressure could lead to buckling of steel silos) and are more sustainable.

4.You can storage almost every volume you want it depends on your investment. We designed silos higher than 100 m. If you, lets say, build 12 concrete silos with 12 m diameter and 60 m height you get a cement storage capacity of about 130 000 tons.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. Our experience in cements silos is over 40 years.

Dear Sulaiman,

if you need the silos for cement reversion than it is better to use 4 silos with each 5000 t cements perhaps than in steel. So you can use the silo for each line for unloading. Also you will more flexible to fill with diffferent cement or other products if necessary. You will be much more flexibel by filling and unloading.

A silo with 20000 t is good if you want to install this silo in a cement factory. But than you must take a concrete silo. A silo in this dimension in steel has not good handling anymore. The normal steel silos are going up to 5000 or 7000 t sonme up to 10000 t but not bigger. But in this dimension ( 10 000 t) the price for concrete silo is more interest

so you must choose by yourself for what kind of silo you need.

For steel silos you can contact us.
