Hi!

I like to know how to calculate the takeup weight of a horizontal gravity takeup. I has the new sixth edition of CEMA, and in 489 page there is a schematic of gravity horizontal takeup without calculation.

Please, help me!

Hi Anderson Rocha

Calculation of takeup weight is lengthy procedure and cannot be explained in this forum.

Pl read CEMA you will find basic of tension calculation .

In short

First you calculate effective tension based on effective tension Now you calculate slack side tension based on drive slip and sag requiment.

Now you calculate tension at point where you want to provide takeupunit. . provide counterweight twice the value of tension to balnce tension in belt

Dear Mr. Anderson Rocha,

In order to decide the counterweight force you have to decide the belt tension at take-up unit. The calculation of belt tension at take-up pulley is a big issue, because it can only be decided when tensions at various points have been decided first. This amounts to an elaborate design exercise and it cannot be explained in this forum.

If you can decide the belt tension at take-up pulley, then the take-up force will just be the double of belt tension at that location. While fixing the belt tension at gravity take-up, we have to see that it is suitable on steady running, starting, stoppage, and restriction of belt sag. The take-up force depends upon the complete design of the conveyor such as dive starting factor, etc.
