Attending chute punctures

Dear all,

While handling I/Ore Lumps or coke, we face problems of frequent chute punctures. These are small holes which arise on different walls due to impact, erosion or so. Though the size is small, the effect due to continuous spillage is high, hence timely attending the problem is very important.

Using conventional welding of patch from outside is cumbersome and time consuming.

I was wondering if some quick fix type epoxy or similar compound (cold welding) is available to arrest the leakage till the major rectification job is taken up. Chutes are of MS plates.

Any response?

Dear Rekhawar,

I believe your request is too general for a comprehensive response. However, there are likely and reasonable methods I can offer once the chute geometry, product properties and flow pattern are known.

You recently, last October, made a request on a collaboration. I did respond. What happened?

Chute Puncture

Dear Mr. Rekhawar,

I do not know the speed of conveyor. Can you change the old chute by new one? Then desing the chute with stone box as you are handling coke-very dengerous material. In TISCO, we have not provided any liner in the coke chute. Provide hanging chain in the chute. This way you can overcome the problem.

I think that U are taking the wrong apporach...always playing on the back foot.

Patching on the outside is a reactive step and prob. the best method if U want to stay that way.

Suggest looking at the wear liners and transfer

design of transfer

liner sizing/material/bolting

chute access systems

proper PM system in place.

If ops. do not want to hand the conveyors over to reg. maintenance, point out the costs for the cleanup etc and fire fighting response etc.. U should be able to make a good case.

If U can use hardfaced plate..U will get over 4 times the wear life at least. Ceramics may be of use..but I do not know your applications etc. Rockboxes are also a good concept if applicable.

Good luck

James

Dear Mr. Morrish,

For handling coke, hard faced liner is not the solution. In TATA steel, INDIA I designed the chute with stone box & it is reported that they have not yet changed the chute. In my opinion, it would be prudent to go in for stone box only-if space permit other-wise go for hard facing.

Attending Iro Ore Chute Punctures

Dear all,

Thanks for your responses. It appears I missed in explaining the point.

The point is, immediate plugging of puncture by conveyor operators till the maintenance crew take up the job. You are all aware that in a running plant, response time in attending the problem is very important.

It will be a stopgap arrangement.

The suggestions of proper chute design, better liner or stone boxes are considering the long-term measures. It is a big subject, which is not to be discussed in this post.

Mr. Nordell, I will respond to you separately.
