Help with the shipping Industry....

Posted in: , on 6. Dec. 2004 - 22:59

Hello,

This is my first post on this forum, it is FULL of very useful info.

My question may be wrong for this board but I have to start somewhere............Does anyone know where to go to gain insight and information about the shipping Industry? I am doing research on buying a ship, a dry cargo/container type ship, lets say 200 ft long.

It will be older, probably early 70's (they are fairly cheap). I would like to owner operate it. I would hire a captain and work with him learning all I could about the oceans, ports, navigation and so on.

The big question is, does anyone know if a person can make a living doing this with one ship as a owner operator? Taking cargo between islands in the Caribbean? Or possibly making runs between Brazil and the USA?

And no I am not a drug dealer, I am married with 3 kids and looking for something different.

Thank you for ANY input, positive or negative. Also any direction to other sites or forums where this info might be more inline.

Hello to you!

You said:

"I am doing research on buying a ship, a dry cargo/container type ship, lets say 200 ft long."...."I would hire a captain and work with him learning all I could about the oceans, ports, navigation and so on."

YOUR QUESTION: "Does anyone know if a person can make a living doing this with one ship as a owner operator? " You also say that you are married with 3 kids and looking for something different.

My question to you: DIFFERENT FROM WHAT?

Do you have the money to finance this venture?

Not just the ship; the insurance, permits, cost of fuel for the ship, to hire the captain, the cost of docking at different ports? It takes plenty of US DOLLARS to accomplish this venture! Very risky!

This might sound like a good idea, but the costs and dangers involved need to be really fined-tuned and you must talk to others that are doing this type of business and especially to those that have tried and failed!

I am not a physiologist, but when you say that you are married with 3 kids and looking for something different, to me this sounds as if you are bored and cannot take the busy family life and it's obligations and need to get away and passing this whole ordeal at sea. The sea can only accommodate those that know and respect it. To me, it sounds like YOU do NOT know the sea.

There are other ways to employ your money to make money, change your routine and be able to get away without putting all your capital, family and your life in harms way.

I do not know what part of this world you are located, but I am in Fort Lauderdale Florida USA. Send me a reply perhaps I could suggest another type of venture for you. marchand11@earthlink.net

Ed,

Thanks for the reply.

Different, as in not the same ol' thing. I enjoy a new challenge and this would be one. You see, I think outside the box........ always have.

Part of my job in studying a new venture is to become very familiar with it, this is what I am doing. Once familiarity is achieved then a decision is made to proceed or bail out.

I have owned many businesses in my life and have some idea what I am getting into. Being a sailor in the BVI and USVI for a few years allows me some insight into this venture. Sailing a boat and operating a ship for profit are two entirely different things.

Yes, I can put my money where my thoughts are.

I have been married to a wonderful woman for almost 20 years and she has blessed me with 3 great kids. No, I am not bored or stressed out with the family life..quite the opposite.

Are you in the shipping business?

No, I’m not in the shipping business. I have also bern in many businesses, from stockbroker to the present real estate brokerage and property management, I feel that the 'risk-factor' in your new venture is too extreme. One thing is to put money at risk but to put life and family life at risk it becomes the extreme!

I have read your reply, and I say good luck to you and your venture.
