A research MPhil/PhD Studentship Available In

"Segregation of Particulates during Delivery and Filling of Dies"

The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology, University of Greenwich (www.bulksolids.com) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the field of particulate flow for the process industries. It has been pre-eminent within its specialist area of research since 1973. The Centre pursues a policy of facilitating the development of its researchers’ abilities.

Applications are invited for a 3 year research post focussing upon segregation of particulates during delivery and filling of dies.

The research work will form part of a national collaborative project (“Engineering the Green State of Powder Products”) involving Universities and industrial collaborators. The overarching aim of this project is to improve the fundamental understanding of the formation of green bodies produced by dry powder processing. This will enable:

•existing manufacturing processes to be optimised; and

•scientifically based process models of the various stages to be developed;

•new processing routes to be designed;

This will lead to pressed bodies with more homogeneous particle packing and hence greater net shape capability. This will translate into superior final bodies and a reduction in post compaction processing.

The successful candidates work will involve quantitative experimental and modelling studies of the effect of powder/granulate flowability on the tendency for blend segregation during powder handling. This will focus on how cohesion, as controlled through the formulation, affects segregation both within compacts and from one compact to another. This work will include the modelling of segregation in the transport between blender and press shoe and will be conducted in concert with the industrial collaborators.

Candidates should have a good First or 2:1 degree in either an Engineering or Physics discipline preferably with content in Chemical, Mechanical or Instrumentation Engineering. Experience and/or education in Particulate/Solids Handling Technology would be advantageous, but not essential.

A bursary for the 3 years research is available and is commensurate with the EPSRC scale.

University policy dictates that travel costs for candidates selected to attend interview can only cover the transport costs incurred from the nearest point of entry in the UK to the University of Greenwich. It is important that applicants should bear this point in mind when applying for this position.

Closing date for applications 25/3/04.
