Storage Bin or Silo Stress Calculations

Dear colleagues

Can anyone suggest any reliable graphical way of calculation pressures in bulk storages? ACI standard relies on Jenssen's method, which is proven for last 100 ish years. However, there are FEAs down the road for decades now, so there is supposed to be some reliable products for that. Does SolidWorks deal with bulks, in terms of pressure distribution? There are flow simulators for that, but I guess it's different.

Any thoughts? Glad to see any suggestions.

Our granular dynamics DEM code ROCKY has been evaluated against hopper stress measurements. It does a good job replicating site stress/strain measurements.

With any code, its only as good as the data you input.

Rocky Coupled To Ansys Fea

As a further note, ROCKY DEM is coupled to feed ANSYS FEA & CFD the necessary mesh loads for stationary and moving surfaces with granular and fluid boundary loads.

Granular loads in bins and silos are not proportional to hydrastatic loads. Wall and bottom configurations differ, especially at discontinuities.

Dr. Andrew Jenike published his famous doctoral dissertation at University of Utah on bin and silo stress analysis. His work has been widely accepted as the defining analytic treatment, until FEA. However, FEA cannot capture the discontinous shear loading mechanism as defined by granular behavior. See for a listing of his work on: www.Amazon.com below:
