Fire Resistant Conveyor Belt Selection

Posted in: , on 11. Apr. 2013 - 02:02

Hi All,

I had a very detailed look to previous threads and couldn't find my answer so please forgive me for opening new thread.

I have been working on two existing conveyor designs.

1- 3000mm wide conveyor - Run in enclosed building - Steel Cord Belt and Cover Material is M.

2- 3000mm wide conveyor - Run in enclosed concrete gallery - Steel Cord Belt and Cover Material is M.

I checked AS1755 and relevant standards but couldn't find what I am looking for...in my opinion, those two belts should be fire resistant belt (at least bottom cover should be grade F) because in case of fire, there is no access through fire hoses and sprinkler system wouldn't be enough. Therefore;

if there is any specific spec or document which tells us how we can decide fire resistant or normal belt would be suitable?

I would like to raise this issue but before doing this,I need some supporting documents.

Regards

Ugur

For safety sake always treat a conveyor running in any kind of gallery or in a confined space such as a building as requiring fire resistant belting.

I don't think I have ever seen a document stating that but here it is mentioned by a major belt manufacturer.

If a fire ever broke out and was spread by the belting or caused by the belting - the first question they would ask in an inquiry is "Was the belting fire resistant rated? - if not why not?". I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that question if it wasn't.

Fr Is Not Fr

Gentlemen:

Most tunnel conveyors throughout the world, that are not coal/coke related are not FR based belts. There are many reasons. Some are listed in the following, not by importance:

1. Life of covers -FR belt will not last much beyond 10 years

2. Power consumption with steel cord belts will be about twice as much for FR

3. Alternatives that better serve the installation using zoned fire fighting - foam, water quench, ...

We have designed water quench systems for tunnel conveyors that client preferred to FR belt. Concept uses spray and thermal triggers.

Dear Mr.Ugur,

FR belt is wrongly understood as Fire Resistant belt. It is not correct. FR means Fire Retardant belts. They are resistance to flame propogation. Low in burning rate. When the flame is quenched, FR belts should not self ignite due to wind.

Dear experts,

We are planning to replace FR belt by HR ( T3 ) belts. What is your opinion ? Is there any "measurable" advantages of FR belts over HR (T3) belts ?

Thanks & Regards,

What Does "Hr" And "Fr" Belt Designate?

Thanks & Regards,

HR designates heat resistant belt = high temperature applications such as beyond 120 C to 450 C or higher.

FR designates Fire Resistant belt = self extinguishing with loss of flame = will not propagate burn beyond flame region and will not continue to burn without flame.

Why do you continue to ask questions of the forum when the information is readily available from the belt suppliers? This process dilutes the value of the forum to mundane dialog.

Fr Or Hr ?

Posted on 26. Apr. 2013 - 08:01

Dear Mr. Nordell,

Kindly clarify my doubt.

A ) If FR ( Fire Retardent ) belt is subjected to high temperature, its top cover can with stand upto 100 degrees centigrade. Also at many places the first and second plies are getting exposed when it carries higher temperature material. Once the top cover is damaged, FR belt cannot serve its purpose.

Whereas HR belt can withstand upto 200 degree centigrade. So the rate of top cover getting damaged will be less in HR belts.

So if there are chances of the top cover of FR will be damaged because of high temperature of its carrying material, it would be better to go for HR belts, though it can catch fire if the temperature goes increasing after certain limit. ( We are planning to provide temperature sensors and auto-sprinkling system for preventive action.).

B ) Kindly give the reference of HR belt conveyor manufacturers to with stand 450 degree centigrade materials.

I am still learning and thanks a lot to you and other experts, who are sharing their valuable knowledge & time.
