Yet Another Half Untruth
Better for what? ■
Re: Ep 1000/4 Or Ep 1000/6 ?
EP 1000/4 and EP 1000/6 are EP fabric Belts, 1000 is the rating 1000 KN/Meter, 4 and 6 represents numbers of plies in each belt.
Which of the above would be better for using them as conveyors?

comparison for what application? Can you be more specific. more details of conveyor system for which you are considering these belts may help. ■
Re: Ep 1000/4 Or Ep 1000/6 ?
Dear experts,
We are having 1000/4 belts at troughing conveyors and 1000/6 belts at vertical conveyors (having cleats and side wall). Since 1000 is the belt rating which is same for both the belts , why the numbers of plies should vary?
More over, production of 1000/6 may take longer time, hence production cost may be high.
1000/6 belt may need longer splice length, more down time of the equipment during vulcanising.
What will be the other implications in designing of mechanicals , say pulleys diameters etc.?
More number of plies may lead to more diameter of pulleys?

Re: Ep 1000/4 Or Ep 1000/6 ?
As you state the 6 ply is used with sidewalls, and the 4 ply on a troughed installation, I suspect the 6 ply belt will be what we call a '4+2' ply, meaning it has 4 tensile layers and 2 cross-rigid layers (one on each side of the carcass).
If you check the inside you might find the two outer layers different from the 4 inner layers, indicating the 4+2 construction.
If this is the case, the two belts cannot be exchanged as simply as you've put your questions... ■
Re: Ep 1000/4 Or Ep 1000/6 ?
Dear Mr.Rvoijen,
In the vertical belt, other than cross rigidity breakers, we have got 6 plies. i.e., all the 6 plies are used in hot vulcanising process. Where as in troughing belts at other locations the conveyors are having 4 plies only. But the belt rating is same at both locations. EP1000
I am eager to know the reason.

Re: Ep 1000/4 Or Ep 1000/6 ?
Interesting:
I suspect their are differences between manufacturers fabric selections. Fewer fabric layers will, I expect, be less costly with savings in skim coats, labor, quality control, and with selection of pulley diameters. Fewer plies = lower outer ply stress = smaller pulleys = lower cost.
However, more plies = higher vulcanized splice strength. ■
Re: Ep 1000/4 Or Ep 1000/6 ?
Dear Mr Ganesh,
Typically a EP 1000/6 would be around 7-8% more expensive that a EP 1000/4 carcass. Why are you considering changing the rating of such a critical belt ? Are you having problems in belt performance ?
In a vertical sidewall belt, the joint efficiency is extremely important. Therefore unless you are actually having issues such as ply separation - which could indicate excessive oiuter-ply bending stress (mentioned by Mr Nordell) and may, in fact, manifest as splice joint slippage - why would you contemplate a change in the number of plies ?

Re: Ep 1000/4 Or Ep 1000/6 ?
Hi all..
Class 1000 is not all that strong, so I suppose the plies are required for load support, therefore implying a wide belt carrying big heavy lumps.
Otherwise use 4 ply or 5 ply.
The more the number of plies, the stronger the splice, but I don't think you are after strength.
However, if the conveyor is inclined, it would pay you to have numerous plies and a good cold splice done with SC2000.

Re: Ep 1000/4 Or Ep 1000/6 ?
Dear Shri Ganesh,
The selection procedure for suitable belt for regular trough belt conveyor and the cleated belt with corrugated side walls is quite different and it is not appropriate to mix up them.
In case of regular trough belt conveyor, for the required tension total rating, one selects the belt of minimum ply, but adequate for load support. This means if EP1000/4 belt is adequate for load support also, then its use will result into economical belt conveyor, as compared to EP1000/6 belt. The belt EP1000/6 can also have difficulty about its troughing if the belt width is not adequate.
In case of cleated belt with corrugated side walls, its selection consideration is altogether different. There is no troughing of belt and hence the earlier said consideration is not valid. Here requirement is that the belt should be transversely stiff enough to suit the inward bending of belt by two wheels (pulleys), and it should be also suitable to support the off-centre load by material within bucket (the cleats together with corrugated side walls creates bucket to hold the material). Such conveyor is known as ‘S’ conveyor and belt often has suffix ‘well’. This belt selection know-how is of proprietary nature, created by belt manufacturers by extensive testing, field data etc.
Possibly this information may be of use.
