Belt Thickness Tolerances

Posted in: , on 19. May. 2009 - 10:06

Dear forum,

Could anyone helps me how to determine the tolerances of Belt Thickness that permissible for an existing systems of Belt-Conveying ?

What parameters should be calculated for the determination ?

Any example of those for our references ?

Looking forward for your reply.

Try ISO 583:2007 for a start.

But:

You might be looking for a method to select the carcass for a particular conveyor. In that case you need to refer to a belt manufacturer's catalogue. These might be copyrighted & so you should download them yourself. Dunlop, Fenner, Yokohama, Bando, Continental, GoodYear: to name a few.

The way I read your post is you are looking for the tolerances within you can select a new belt on an existing conveyor.

The thickness of the covers hardly matter for the operation, the limits are based on the design of the system, mainly the size of pulleys, curve radius, width/trough angle situation and transition distances. Heavier belts have thicker carcasses and need bigger/larger of all mentioned. Our product brochures have all this specified per type.

If you are looking for the tolerance on a belt with respect to the specifications:

thickness tolerance up to 10mm thick belts: +/-1mm

thickness tolerance from 10mm thick belts: +/-10%

covers

up to 4mm thick: -0.2 (no plus tolerance)

from 4mm thick: -5% (no plus tolerance)

Dear Mr.Irfan,

I understand that you would like to know when the conveyor need to be replaced as it is getting worn out after some time. Am I right? Since the top & bottom covers are only for wear protection , you can operate the conveyor as long as the fabric plies are not exposed. That is, covers are still present to protect the plies which are load carrying members. Once you see the plies, you need more frequent inspection and call for shut down for replacing the belt.

Again it depends on the cleanliness of the site condition ( housekeeping ), smooth running of rollers, lagging of pulleys, material handled on the conveyor , force of impact at receiving point, length of the conveyor, speed of the conveyor etc.,

Is my answer useful to you?

Regards,
