Fabric Belt Vulcanising Joints

Dear Experts,

The strength at the fabric belt vulcanizing joint is read as (n-1)/n where n is the number of steps taken in the joint. I would like to know whether it is applicable for both cold and hot joints? How this formula has been derived?

Far from an expert though have a look at p 10 of .pdf or 13 of the document, it is a physical thing (the splice physically looses a ply and hences its strength).

There are other splice designs which are claimed to not suffer from this issue, such as:
