Re: Belt Track Or Belt Sway Switches

Hi there Sganesh...

Indeed it is normal practice to put in a time delay on your belt alignment switches.

I usually set them to about 10 to 15 seconds to let any badly behaving part of a belt or wonky splice through, without tripping out the conveyor on every cycle.

Alarm Delay

The belt misalignment switches we manufacturer have no time delays, but have 2 SPDT outputs, one that signals an alarm if the belt is beginning to sway (this gives you a chance to fix the problem), the second output is shutdown. Once the second shutdown relay is activated, you do not want a time delay. The conveyor will coast after shutdown and this should be limited to as short a time as possible.

The Belt Misalignment arm is located on both sides of the belt at the head and tail end of the belt except on very short conveyors. It is positioned about 1 inch from the normal travel of the belt. The arm has ball bearings rated to 5000 RPM, so it will spin when touched by the belt. Therefore a momentary hit by a bad splice will not trip the alarm. When the belt actually begins to misalign, the belt will contact the roller arm and it will begin to spin. As the belt continues to sway the arm begins to rotate from vertical. If the arm reaches 10 degrees from vertical the alarm signal is activated. If the problem is not corrected and the arm continues to 20 degrees from vertical, the shutdown signal is activated. The distance of misalignment from normal is determined by the height on the shaft where the switch is installed. Lower on the shaft the distances to reach 10 degrees and 20 degrees is much shorter. On belts with high troughing angles, the normal position of the arm can be at an angle towards the edge of the belt, so the arm is at right angle to the normal belt travel. To better understand you may want to view the BM-3 page of our web site or request an e mail of the spec sheet.

In our plant many(i.e 95%) belt sway switches are bypass

It is 100% possible to have not only beltsway switches but all safety devices online.

Please try and you can do it!

When you are by passing safety devices men's and machine's safety are in danger.

most bekt sway switches are installed to prevent belt damage, which can be expensive and cause down time. The switches that prevent personal harm are the pull cords, which you can several web pages including ours,
