Ajax Equipment conveyors for Euro 400 M, Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) plant

Solids equipment handling specialist, Ajax Equipment is supplying high capacity screw conveyors to Aker Kvaerner Solutions for a new Artenius Sines PTA SA, Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) plant, being built in Sines, Portugal. The order follows the successful and reliable operation of Ajax conveyors at an earlier Aker Kvaerner-managed uprate of the Artenius UK T8 PTA plant at Teesside.

The Sines Plant is a strategic investment intended to cover a deficit of PTA in Europe which, at present, imports about 400,000 tonnes of the product from Asia. The euro 400 million plant is designed to produce 700,000 tpa of PTA when it comes on-stream in early 2010.

Pure terephthalic acid is a fine white powder manufactured by reacting paraxylene in air. This reaction produces a crude terephthalic acid powder, which is purified at high temperatures and pressures in water, removing impurities to form PTA. The initial oxygenation process produces a slurry which is transferred to rotary vacuum filters to yield a damp powder containing acetic acid. Two Ajax Equipment 8m length, screw conveyors, are used to transfer the damp powder to Rotary Dryer for subsequent transfer to storage silos. Ajax is also supplying essential plant interface equipment including chute work, flexible metallic bellow connectors and slide valves. These are designed to optimise conveyor performance and implement flow best practice.

The high capacity Ajax Equipment screw conveyors feature 316L stainless steel screws and are gas tight to accommodate a nitrogen purge atmosphere. The conveyors are ATEX compliant to Zone 22. Given the 8 m length of the conveyors particular care has been taken to ensure a robust and secure construction for each conveyor.

“We chose Ajax Equipment screw conveyors for their reliability and quality of construction – PTA is a 24 hours a day, continuous production process. Moreover, their performance at our Teesside T8 PTA plant has provided dependable , operation and thus enabling us to consistently achieve high levels of PTA production,” said Richard Smith, mechanical engineer, Artenius UK.

PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid) is used to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the polyester resin used to make plastic drinks bottles and polyester yarn. It is also commonly used in polyester films and various engineering resins and binders.
