The complete system supplier, KOCH, presents a comprehensive range of products for mixing, dosing, conveying and drying plastic granulates

A broad spectrum of plant and equipment for mixing, dosing, conveying and drying plastic granulates awaits trade visitors at KOCH Stand 3213 in Hall A3 at FAKUMA 2008 in Friedrichshafen. The Navigator fully automatic material feed system, dry air dryers from the EKO range with eco-control system and integrated touch panels, the Graviko dosing system, KKT mobile auxiliary dryers and the new double mixer - these are the highlights announced for the Ispringen-based Werner Koch Maschinenfabrik GmbH stand.

“Our modular system makes us one of the few suppliers of complete systems for the plastic granulate industry who are in a position to offer tailor-made solutions for our customers’ highly varied requirements – whether they are looking for single units or complex central systems,” explains Prof. h. c. Dr. h. c. Werner Koch, CEO and owner of Koch-Technik. The company is also showcasing its Navigator type material management system for material distribution. A patented system, it ensures no residues remain in the material distribution system. Fully automatic and program controlled, it links machine lines with the appropriate material lines before the conveyor feeds the relevant machine. The feed lines are placed one on top of the other and then locked together to contain the flow of granulate more securely. Navigator makes it possible to link a maximum of 40 different materials with up to 40 processing machines. Suction valves clean the lines completely after each conveying cycle. Navigator can also be integrated in existing conveying systems; there is no need to change their basic design. (Figure 1)

Koch is also exhibiting the Eco control system for its CKT and EKO dry air dryers. This is a patented energy-saving drying solution with careful material handling. It prevents sensitive materials such as PA, PC, LCP or POM in the storage containers from becoming overdry or sustaining heat damage. It also makes energy savings of up to 40% possible. Predried material can be called up at any time. The integrated touch panel with touch-sensitive display offers the user a convenient overview of the entire system. Drying temperature, regulation of the air volume, hold time monitoring, throughput calculations and energy saving are shown clearly and it is easy to adjust the settings. The user now has a window showing clearly the dew point at intervals over the last 24 hours, thanks to a new software enhancement. Analyzing these readings shows the actual load on the dryer and indicates problem-free operation. (Figure 2)

The patented Graviko system doses miniscule quantities precisely and reliably with the highest reproducibility. With a slider, or alternatively using a star feeder (chamber volume dosing), the individual components are dosed into a container with a scale. There is also a dosing slider available for very small quantities. A scale then records the actual weight of the individual components which reports to the KOCH control system and compares it with the set weight. With its closed chamber volume, the patented Gravico system offers precision dosing within +/-3 grains / 1000 grains. Graviko can be used directly on injection moulding machines and is also completely compatible with other dosing devices, mixers, conveyors and other accessories from Koch-Technik. (Figure 3)

puts up to 150 kg/h, sufficient for four dosing stations

The newly designed KKT auxiliary dryers are suitable for drying and conveying where space is at a premium. Koch has taken the design of the KKT dryer a step further, placing the drying container behind the dryer to save space. This makes filling the drying container more convenient and it is easier to move the mobile dryer along narrow gangways. These mobile dry air dryers can be used as standard for all practical applications and even for very hygroscopic plastic granulates. The switch control system allows the drying process to be adjusted to the throughput rate and the initial moisture level of the granulate, making energy savings of up to 40% possible. (Figure 4)

Specially designed for mixing and dosing bulk goods with different densities, Koch presents its double mixer (patent applied for). In traditional mixers the different materials often separate and arrive at the processing machine in separate layers. That can result in considerable deficiencies in the quality of the end product. To avoid this separation, Koch has developed an innovative double mixer - this represents technology that was previously unavailable in the plastics industry. The innovative double mixer works by executing overlapping horizontal pushing and turning movements which carry the materials from the bottom to the top of the mixing container. This results in very effective mixing even after just a short time. Materials with widely differing densities such as powder or grains, rod-shaped materials, scraps of foil, recycled granulate with a very high dust content or even sawdust can be mixed thoroughly with this technology. The homogenised mixture then enters the intake screw without separating. The double mixer guarantees perfect quality in the end product. (Figure 5)
