Hopper outlet design

Hi all

How do I calculate the possible feed rate from a specific hopper outlet?

We have a current installation with two square hoppers with steep walls (10deg) and 500x500 openings feeding from the same bin.

The product is an abrasive slag with the largest particle size of 50mm (10%) and the bulk of the particles between 1-3mm with moisture content of 5-8%

Would anybody be able to say on an educated guess if a 40ton/hour feed rate would be possible from a single 500x500 hopper?

I think long time ago I read the J R Johanson paper on estimating discharge from hoppers and bins ( Society of mining engineers 1965) and if my memory serves me right the discharge rate is also a function of Wall friction and internal friction. I recommend you get your self a copy of this paper it has all the details you need.

We need to know the bulk density of the slag?

What is the outlet discharging to, conveyor belt, feeder etc.

If there is no resriction and the slag with flow then one should feed in excess of 40 TPH.

If you take the area of the opening muliply by the bulk density by

the velocity it will flow out at it will give you some rate. Any restriction by some form of feedig device will reduce the velocity.

Dear Mr. Pieter,

Hopper outlet is designed based on the following condition.

1. Is it a mass flow hopper.

2. Discharging equipment below the hopper.

Based on the above the hopper out is designed.

The bulk density of BF slag is 1.1 t/cub.m So for 40t/hr . 500 x500 mmm opening with vibrating feeder is adequiate.
