Re: Gearmotor Or Gearbox+Motor

Dear Mr. Mahmud,

Possibly one will have difficulty in using gear-motor in following cases :

1) Medium length and long length conveyor often need fluid coupling. The gear-motor cannot have a fluid coupling.

2) There will be also some limitation in use of specific brake to suit conveyor particular design. Many times, the geared motor will have a brake according to the standard model.

3) As compared to bevel helical gearbox or worm gearbox, geared motor may require more dimensions along the axis of the drive pulley.

Hope this indirectly clarifies your query.

Hello Mahmud..

Geared motors are generally economical up to about 22kW, and are used when the client will not allow a simple shaft mounted helical box with vee belt drive from the motor for whatever reason.

Personally I like the vee belts as you can easily adjust the conveyor speed by changing pulleys.

(I am doing this right now on a conveyor I stumbled across in Namibia where a short conveyor handling oversize rocks is going twice as fast as would have been sensible).

For brake requirements simply use a brake motor.

Geared motors are actually very neat on the really small applications

Dear Mahmud

Geared motors are very common for low horse power conveyors (say less than 15 Kw). They are also available with bevel helical gears.

For higher KW ( say above 30 KW) rating they are not available and fluid coupling is required
