The only reliable method is to survey and measure said piles to acccount for volume and then calculate weight and mass to either metric or american equivalents for that product as there are standard tables available for same such as the "Pocket Reference Guide" written by Glover found in the lab safety supply catalog or the Ben Meadows catalogs.
Unfortunately you cannot do much with out volume calculations.

Surveying is it the only method and then using the bulk density
Over time, with yr inputs and outputs, U will get a correlation with the stockpile surveys

The plane table survey is the only option, as already suggested.
You have to deploy a reputed agency for the survey. This shall be done on a regular basis so that accuracy of data can be optimised in the long run.

Dear Mr John E Sueke,
I understand you want to continously weigh the incoming and outgoing stocks for inventory purpose. If my understanding is correct, the best way is to place the storage container (Silo or bunker) on weighing platform or load cells. The weight of the storage container shall be continously monitered by PLC, or many other type of systems available. You can then judge or record the inflow and outflow.

Measuring the Weight of a Stockpile
Do any of your members of your service have technology which can measure a large stock pile of wheat in bulk, and or other grains? The equipment will give an accurate assessment of the weight of the Stockpile.
The stockpile could be in a bunker or even out in the open air, the alternative is of course to load product on vehicle and take to a weighbridge this could be very time consuming and expensive. I.E. the problem is to measure stockpiles each the same product but of differing heights and dimensions.
