Dear All,

I am looking for Vibrating Conveyor for online transportation of Hot EAF Slag from Slag Pit to approx. 50 mtrs outside. The water will be sprayed continuously on conveyor. at a time approx. 25 MT of Hot Slag is generated.

Presently, we are using Dozer to push the material.

Any information on this suject is welcome.

Regards

Dear Shri P Rekhawar,

I would suggest you to give some more information about the transportation distance and level difference. As you are saying the slag is in the pit and then it is to be transported by 50 m horizontal distance. At the end of 50m distance, where will the material go? Would you not require some elevation at the discharge end so that conveyor discharge would be possible? In case you are putting a conveyor at the bottom of pit, then you would need certain shape (similar to hopper) of the pit, its discharge mouth etc. What is the size of the slag and its temperature?

Transportation Of Eaf Slag By Vibrating Conveyors

Posted on 18. Aug. 2004 - 06:47

This is an idea only, which I want to work on. I was told that in some plant long trough Vibro Feeders are used for removal of hot slag from Pit.

Approx. 40 Mt of Molten Slag is generated at high temp. of approx. 1200 deg. C. The Pit is an enclosed chamber with Concrete walls from 3 sides. The hot solidified Slag is removed by Caterpillar Pay loaders, suitable to handle Hot slag.

We do not spray water inside the pit, as it may blast.

On the heap outside ( approx. 25 mtrs), the water is sprayed and Slag is allowed to cool.

This cooled slag is than trasported to Dump yard.

Now, my idea is to have a mechanised arrangement of bringing the Hot/solidified slag to out of the pit. Both the points are at same level.

There must be a solution to this, I am looking for that!

Regards

Dear Shri Rekhawar, your problem appears to be of a very specialised nature. The material handling method seems of secondary nature.

1) Material handling system will work if the slag happens to be loose and in bulk material form.

2) Is the slag loose and free flowing like bulk material, or is it being broken / detached by pay loader?

3) As for conveyor, you can think of using wide chain drag conveyor or apron pan conveyor, which are often used for conveying hot clinker.

4) What is the lump size of slag?

I understand that yours is a steel plant. The best option is to check with other steel plant and see how they are handling such slag.

Slag Pot Haulers

Posted on 5. Sep. 2004 - 06:30

Mechanical vibrating conveyors: Heat resistant would be critical. I can see probs with slag setting up in pan and then huge problems.

In Hamilton Ontario Canada, they use SLAG POT HAULERS to move slag to dumping and cooling area and then process from there.

LOOK UP a company called HECKETT MULTI-SERV whose expertise is very deep on this whole subject. This is what they do.

hOLE THIS HELPS. sincerely, George Baker

Transportation Of Eaf Slag By Vibrating Conveyors

I visited the site of Mulkty serve and tried to contact Multi serve, however no response so far. Can you suggest any other .

Looking at the situation, I find that conventional Hot Ladle is the solution. I want to know any other alternative available.

Problem with Hot pot is that on colling the whole mass will become a big lump, whereas we need slag of size 10 - 40 mm. This way whole new set up will be required for breaking & crushing the big lumps of Slag.

Hope, some better solution will come out.

Dear Shri Rekhawar,

Given the heat and the relatively short distance involved, you may want to consider a metal slat conveyor. These are commonly used in casting plants.

Slipstick Conveyors have been used to convey hot materials of this type. The conveyor is different from other vibrating conveyors in that it moves slow forward - quick return; all horizontally. There are no springs or tuning. Thermal expansion is more easily accommodated. Indirect air or water cooling is sometimes used for pan life.

Applications include: preheated steel for electric furnace, dry ash from kilns and incinerators, hot electrode and slag like material from aluminum smelters, etc.

Because it does not operate on a natural frequency; long lengths, heavy loads, and many other problems are solved.

The conveyor only works in horizontal applications however.
