AJAX WINS BNFL RESIDUES PROCESSING CONTRACT

British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) has chosen screw conveyors from solids

handling and processing equipment specialist, Ajax Equipment for handling

residue materials , in a contract worth £100,000.

In total Ajax Equipment is supplying three screw conveyors for the transfer

of residue materials as part of a £22 M BNFL residues treatment project.

The conveyors will be positioned in a tiered arrangement such that they

convey and process the materials as they are transferred to a dissolving

vessel.

The seven metre length Ajax screw conveyors are made of stainless steel

(grade 304) with a warm water jacket and feature a 6 inch quadrant paddle screw. In order to process the residues material effectively, an acidic

solution is pumped in a contra flow to the direction of the screw. The level

of the solution is controlled by a weir gate.

The conveyors are tiered such that as the material reaches the end of one

conveyor it is lifted into a chute, using a novel box scoop, and transferred

to the next conveyor. All the conveyors are fully enclosed.

"Ajax screw conveyors are designed to handle difficult to process materials.

We will be undertaking extensive trials of the conveyor design to ensure

they are able to meet the demands of BNFL's residues treatment process,"

said Mark Waters, director, Ajax Equipment Ltd.
