Life of cold vulcanising cement

Is there any claim for unlimited shelf life of cold bonding cement? Generally manufacturers claim 6 months to one year shelf life. But, if we browse www.olivermicon.com, they mentioned shelf life of their cement as unlimited. Is it possible? If so, how to test the shelf life? As the time passes, will the cement looses its strength?

If we keep cold cement in refrigerated temperaturers can we increase the shelf life?

The shelf life of cold cure adhesives is dependant on a few factors :

In any polychloroprene adhesive ( rubber-to-rubber or rubber-to-steel ) there is an element of solvent content in the base component. This is usually triChloro-Ethylene ( Rema SC2000, Eli-Bond FR700 ) or in countries where "Trike" is outlawed, it is Ethyl Acetate ( Rema SC4000 and Eli-Bond FR705 ).

The quality of the seal in the tin lids or caps is crucial to prevent moisture ingress. If moisture gets into the base component, skinning of the top layer occurs. This is not a problem as once the skin is broken, the adhesive should still be fluid underneath.

When the hardner absorbs moisture, the isocyanate crytallises and cannot be used. There is a loss of reactivity and a hardening of the liquid iso.

Therefore when the shelf life expires, it is more commonly due to hardener crystallisation than anything else.

We produce then Eli-Bond range and make sure that all hardener bottles are tinted to repel U.V light as well as the fitting of an airtight plastic stopper under the screw-cap. This keeps the moisture away and can allow our adhesives to carry an indefinite shelf life.

Shelf Life Of Cold Cure Adhesives

All single-component adhesive cements carry a curing agent like an organic peroxide or ultra fast organic accelerator - usually a very small percentage. Discuss with the supplier of the adhesive to seperate out the curing agent and supply the adhesive as a two-component system- base resin and curing agent( preferably a TMT accelerator, rather than peroxide) which you can mix at site just before application. This way the shelf-life of the cement/adhesive can be increased.

Wahid

There is nothing that is infinite so everything has a limit that can withstand the surroundings. If anybody can claim that his product to be unlimited shelf life then he is joking. Every product has shelf life so go back to the manufacturers manual and see that. Only one thing will have something like a decade shelf like which is fasteners and provided that you well store them.
