i just want a belt speed of 1.5 m/s. belt width of 40 cm.

Further to the suggestion by Dr. R H Wohlbier, I inform as below.

As you intend to convey objects (piece goods) by belt conveyor, you need to mention mainly the following data :

It is presumed that your system will be placing the objects one by one on the belt conveyor. It is inferred from your query that the chocolate and milk item is in packed condition.

1) Object width, length and height.

2) Object height when on belt.

3) Object weight

4) Object placement method.

5) Number of objects to be conveyed in one hour.

6) Objects discharge method (whether it is picked up by man / mechanism or it is just discharged at head end.

7) Whether any function is being performed on object, when being conveyed.

8) Conveying length.

9) Conveying inclination.

10) Lift i.e. level difference between discharge pulley and tail pulley.

11) Nature of the plant.

12) Other special requirements (as you are mentioning food item, whether you need various items of stainless steel, special covers on the sides, frequency of cleaning, etc.).

The information as above will enable the people to respond to your requirement.

Thanks! I'll get all the data needed to solve this.

but...is there a formula for conveyor to guide a beter design?

Conveyor design is a complex issue and it is not possible to explain / describe in this forum. However, first thing you need to look is for your national standard on belt conveyors. If you have such standard, it will certainly provide basic information and guideline on the subject. Also, you may not be able to design and use the belt conveyor without reference to the standard of your country.

You can refer DIN / ISO / BS / MHEA etc standards which certainly provide the vital information for the conveyor design.

Additionally, for more information you need to refer to published literature by various manufacturers, books on belt conveyors etc.

If your second query was about required belt speed for your application, then you can calculate it as below, which is a simple issue.

Minimum belt speed in mps = (largest dimension of object + spacing between object) x (Number of objects to be conveyed in one hour) / 3600

Above considers meter as unit for dimensions.

The speed so calculated needs to be within permissible limits, which generally would be the case for practical applications.

Dear Batman,

Please take the quality of the belt covers and edges into account. For transporting food you need and FDA approved belt. Any belt producer like Ammeraal International or Siegling should be able to help you out.

Kind regards,

Dear Mr.Batman,

Please refer your standard for design of conveyor for such type of materials. But always keep in mind as regards belting as indicated by Dr. Gabriel.Otherwise you will land into problem.
