After Europe, the Americas and Asia, another continent will soon see Magaldi technology in operation: Australia. Magaldi Power has just received an order from Delta Electricity for the turn-key retrofit installation of the Magaldi Ash Cooler (MAC) in Wallerawang (2 x 500 MWe) and Mount Piper (2 x 660 MWe) power stations, both located in New South Wales.

At present, Wallerawang’s International Combustion boilers are equipped with water impounded hopper systems using an ash pond for final ash storage, while the Mount Piper units have IHI boilers now using Submerged Chain Conveyor (SCC) systems involving trucks for final ash transportation.

The MAC system was chosen in order to obtain an increased boiler availability and to benefit from the beneficial effects of a dry ash removal process.

The technical and economical feasibility of the project was investigated thoroughly by Delta, taking into account the experience of several existing MAC users around the world and the opinion of independent engineering companies. The results of this feasibility study gave Delta Electricity the green light to proceed with the contract.

On-site work will start in early 2004 in one of the units of Wallerawang power station. The other Wallerawang unit and the two Mount Piper units are planned to be installed in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
