Longitudinal Belt Cut Detection
Dear Mr Mehesh,
GOOD YEAR has develop sensor gaurd for it . In one thread I explained the working of the same. Please check.

On Line Detection Of Belt Cut
Dear Mahesh
Belt longitudnal cut is caused due to loading of sharp metalic piece on conveyor like chute liner etc. This sharp edge metal stuck between fixed part of conveyor and causes lonitudnal cut on the belt
Many belt manufactures provide Belt rip detection system at the time of manufacturing of belt
other wise in case same is not provided in the belt It is very simple to have on line longitudnal belt cut detection system.I am explaing you a simple way
At about 3/5 m distance just below the carrying belt (about 15-20 mm below belt ) provide a wire / thread accross the conveyor. this wire /thread will be connected to limit switch at one end and tied at other end. In case of any cut in the belt projected cut surface will break the thred / wire and limit switch will operate to stop the conveyor in case of belt cut.

Re: Online Detection Of Longtudinal Belt Cut
Dear Mahesh..
Quite frankly I have not had much luck with belt rip detectors of any type, and there are a considerable number available.
If I were to pick one type though, it would be the one that uses light beams and sensors under the carry belt at the loading point. If you rip the belt, the material falls through the rip, and the light beams are broken, thus tripping the belt.
(Not much use if the belt is running empty though, and completely useless if the belt is being destroyed by an idler support).

On-Line Rip Detection
There are an enormous number of systems, unfortunately none fully reliable over time and all that require various degrees of maintenance.
At one stage I did a study on the many systems and I think it came to over 50 systems available. My conclusion at the time was that its best to design out the risk but if this was not possible then either the string line system which was very cheap and easy to instal or the system used in steel cord belts where you put in a conductive loop into the top or bottom cover was OK if there was not high impact onto the belt. This system is however quite expensive and very expensive to retrofit.
I know of a party working on a system that showed a lot of promise some years agobut needed further work. This system, once it is perfected is theoretically very reliable as it will have on-line self diagnostics. The last I heard however is that it will not be available commercially until early next year.
Trust this helps

Re: Online Detection Of Longtudinal Belt Cut
Yes, there are many systems, some better than others. The best protection is prevention. Use a fit-for-purpose curved hood and spoon chute design. It is the most reliable, cost effective method and efficient means to eliminate belt puntures, rips, gouging, and abrasive wear. ■
Longitudional Belt Rip
dear colin benjamin
in neyveli lignite corporation in india nearly 200 kms of different kind of steel cord belt,ep belt and n/n belt are running.
the longitudional THR CUT is some times occur because of foreign material trapping in the beltand structures in different location
we have analised use of different kind of method of avoiding belt thro -cut
whilest on the above you have indicated some new party is developing some new way of PROTECTION TO BELT THRO CUT.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE NEW SYSTEM METHOD OF FUNCTION,
SO THAT IT WILL BE USEFULL FOR THE ENDUSER

Longitudinal Rip Detection
Dear N Kathiravan,
You do have a very significant system at Neyvelli. The person and company who are working on this system are definitely not ready yet. I have known them and known of this system for a long time and it is a unique approach and shows great promise however as it is going through a patented process and I don't think it will be commercially ready until next year. I am more than happy to pass on your email to the company so they will contact you at an appropriate time. It is not my position to publish anything except to make the comments I have.
All the best

Online Detection of longtudinal belt cut
Dear all,
How to detect strating of the longitudinal belt cut on the coal conveyor belt when the conveyor is running(i.e. online detection) due to a metallic tramp iron getting struck between skirt plate & belt.
Pls suggest the methods/ techniques to detect this online.
Thanks in advance.
