How to find out - Wear or Heat Resistant?

Posted in: , on 22. May. 2009 - 09:41

Dear all,

I have got an unused belt with out any identification marks or any purchase history.

Will it be possible to find out that will this belt be suitable for M24 ( Wear resistant ) or heat resistant application?

Thanks & Regards,

Surely. Just chop a sample off & send it to a manufacturer for his verdict. It might cost you: but then you'll know.

On second thoughts; how long is the bit of belt? It used to be normal to stamp the identifier at regular intervals along the belt.

This may seem like a very simple approach, but most heat res. belting will have a very unique odor. EPDM based heat res. belt will emit that unique odor. Again, you can look for a roll number or branding in the belt that may or may not identify exactly what the belt compound is.

What is the type of material in the belt - nylon or polyester?

The carcass substrate is irrelevant in determination of the the characteristics of the rubber compound.

It is important. Because a heat resistant belt mostly uses n66 polymer in the carcass which has got a higher melting point than n6 (unless we are talking of some cheap cost reduction belt). But if it is a polyester carcass, it will not give any clues. Then you need to only test the rubber and find out.
