Dust Control for bulk handling of quartz

Posted in: , on 9. Feb. 2004 - 12:20

We load Quartz in bulk in a Sea port in Egypt. Due to the material's fragile nature, it is screened and passed onto a conveyor to load the vessel. The dust generated during the screening process is a problem especially if the weather is not windy which means that the dust remains suspended in the air around the loading area.

I have noticed that the main areas of concern are:

1) when the front wheel loaders empty their buckets into the screening units hopper,

2) right above the screen,

3) and the area where the undersized material is being stored.

Please advice if you have a simple solution to this problem.

Dear Mr. Sherif Shenouda,

This sounds like a perfect application for a combined containment/fogging solution. I suggest that you contact companies such as Martin Engineering, Benetech, et cetera for possible solutions.

It is advisable that the engineering company or consulting firm view the application and problem before making a proposal. If you contact a company and they give you "THE SOLUTION" without looking closely at your loading, screening, and storage process, you are likely to get a good solution to someone elses problem - which may, or may not, meet your needs.

Dear Mr. Sherif Shenouda,

There are many established methods to solve your dust problem. However, solution is subjective to actual conditions, methods, coverage, etc. for material handling equipment / item.

As stated by Mr. Dave Miller, this can be best studied (with reference to time and efforts) by the experts in dust control business and then they would be in a position to propose the optimum solution, with minimum alteration and disturbance to existing operation.

Dear All

One of the main problems that I am facing is that all the equipment is mobile, which makes it very difficult to install a dust control system.

An option is to install a fixed baghouse filter, and use flexible piping to connect the duct to the baghouse, unfortunatly this will require a very large fan to compensate for the large pressure drop in the long pipes.

Another option is to install the dust collecting system onto the conveyor belt and screening unit, and the only practical dust collector that is both right and fairly simple is a cyclone seperator which should be ideal since the particles are larger than 5 microns in size.

Best Regards and awaiting your prompt replies
