Conveyor Questions

Mahmud you have to explain to us what you are doing and what you are doing it with you are asking a very generalised question which is hard or nearly impossible to answer.

Not knowing the belt size, type, drive type and whether it is a troughing or pipe conveyor or a multi pass unit with delivery on both the outgoing and incoming return affects capacity of the conveyor. Not knowing the coupling and drive unit types is also a problem which must be resolved.

How heavy is the material to be conveyed?

Will you be using rubber weld on lagging or ceramic? will you be using impact beds in your tail pullies? will you be using beater pullies to shed dust off the conveyor at the tail pulley? will you be using belt scrapers at the head pulleys and tail pulley plows to removew spillage at the tail pullies?

What are the weather conditions? are you required to have enclosed troughing idlers and enclosed transfer points? what type of bin switches and speed switches are you using?

Is the material inquestion to be conveyed toxic or flammable or prone to spontaneos combustion like soft bituminous coal is the ground it will rest on suffiecient for static electricy control from the conveyor? what type of fire suppression will you be using? DRY CHEMICAL, FOAM, CO2, water deluge guns?

Your conveyor installer will have done all of this for you and hopefully provided additional inherent strenths with your system.

What type of foundations are used for its drive units and tail pullies? What type of counterweights are used be they vertical take ups or hydraulic?, what types of oils are used in the gear drives and hydraulic take ups, let alone whether it is on the surface or underground or in a shallow gallery for reclaim also hinders us as there are many many things that need to be done long before you should even think about commissioning a conveyor system.

You have not told us about the type of conveyor whether it is cable or steel stand supported, whether vulcanised or mechanical splices are used, the type and grade of conveyor belting, the feeder system voltage the voltage operating the conveyor, whether it is low voltage below 600 volts, the electrical system line drop for its length, whether it is 50 cycle, 60 cycle alternating current, or direct current drive, whether it is microwave or ultra high frequency low voltage controlled or PLC and SCR drive or timer controlled low voltage, whether emergency stops are used in your location/country, the number drive units and the number transfer points, bins, silos, primary crushers let alone screening plant and belt feeders and the length of the conveyors from tranfer point to transfer point, and the type of drive unit whether it is a conventional head pulley with over and under wrap drive and hydraulic take up or a midline drive with a hydraulic take up or whether it is curved and has inclines or declines in altitude and the full length of the conveyor in question.

Fishing for answers is no solution, and hurts the forum as much as spam does in the long run.

There should be a Commissioning Manual in the Project Documentation Requirement. Usually 6 copies are requested to be left lying around in places like the gatehouse, kitchen & personnel office. Are you reading or writing it?

Commissioning

Dear Mr. Izaharis

Thank you for your comments.

Assume that there is a conventional belt conveyor with an ordinary geometry.

For example:

Troughing idlers in carrying side and flat in return

Gravity take up

Drive unit: elec. Motor3phase, hydraulic coupling, gear box, flexible coupling

Rubber lagging in drive pulley

Scrapper in drive side and plow in tail side

Weather: 50 Celsius max. , humidity 80% max

Material: iron pellet or lime

Ep type belt

380 volt, 50 Hz

In fact I want to know that how is process of commissioning.

Dear Mr. Johngateley

thank you for your reply

I want to write it for first time.

best regards

Dear Mr. Mahmud,

The exact technical and commercial procedure for the activity you are mentioning, would amount to a big contractual document and the specific technical modality will also be partially affected by the nature of plant, etc. I suggest you to get a copy of contract document (and also of earlier papers relating to the various activities) of earlier plant / conveyors and amend it as per the need.

However in general, I can only say that you have to take many preparatory actions such as:

(1) Availability of material to feed the system (section of the system)

(2) Readiness of the other section of the plant to receive the material from conveying system

(3) Arranging / employing the manpower to operate the plant / conveyors.

(4) Arranging the measuring instruments for various tests to be conducted and documented

(5) Agreed modality to conduct performance test, their documentation, signing etc.

(6) Various tools and tackles as would be required.

Ishwar G Mulani.
