We are experiencing problem with our 48 inch picket belt (steel cord). About 2 months ago there was a 3 inch cut on the belt along the width of the belt. Nothing cut the belt and we are yet to determine what cause it .

Two months later the cut extended to about 8 inches with the steel cord exposed. The following day the cut extended to the side walls.....

Can u help us in this matter as to a solution to repair the belt.

Dear patel

you should not leave belt as it is .in case your steel chords are exposed they will be rusted and may cause belt snap at this location.

In case ypur sde walls are also damaging it means some of the chords are damaged

In my openion you may be having original splice joint at this point which is failed

As a fast repair to the pocket belt we vulcanized the cut portion of the belt. the belt ran good for a week. but now the cut has opened along the lenght of the belt to the sidewalls about 24 inches. as a temporary solution we will be placing clips to hold the belt. any suggestions will we welcomed

I am a little unlear if the cut is along the belt or across the belt. Can you clarify?

How old is the belt?

If the cut is across the belt it may well be a factory join that has opened up. This should be easily repaired through either hot or cold vulcanising. Why did the last repair only last a week?

Problem In Belt

Dear patel

As your conveyor is having side wall type steel chord belt . Base belt is steel chord belt and side walls are not having any fabric or steel chordsthey are made of rubber and pased on sides of base belt.

As your base belt Joint/ chords failed load is transfered to side walls and you are observing cut on side walls.

you have to again splice the Base belt .. You can take help of belt supplier in splicing

You can also findout status of steel chords by X ray examination

Splicing

Posted on 29. Sep. 2005 - 07:00

we cannot splice the belt because there is not enough belt to do the splicing...

the cut is now along the lenght of the belt .again as a temporary measure we placed a piece of belt ep 1000/4 minus the top rubber to cover the cut about 60 inches by 40 inches with 2 1/2 e flexco clips.

currently we do do have spare belt with no ends . the two options to us are

1. change entire belt ( this invloves removing all the pulleys )

2. change piece of belt and vulcanize

the belt length is 554 feet and it runs vertical.

Problem In Conveyor Belting

Dear kamlesh

You will not get any advantage by joining Fabric belt. Pl again review the conveyor you may still get splice length by shifting yail end or slight modification in chute. In case you send us the drawing we will provide the solution. You may contact belt supplier and can get piece of base belt

Dear Mr. Kamalesh,

I suggest that you must inform the problem to manufacturer. Please donot do any experiment wtih this type of conveyor.Try to replace the belt if it is old.I understand that it is very long & elevated conveyor.

Steel Cord Pocket Belt

Posted on 7. Oct. 2005 - 07:22

Depending on the exact size and location of the damage, your belt can be repaired, by hot vulcanization.

Most high angle steel cord pocket belts are made with wire mesh reinforcement above and below the steel cords. This is what gives the belt its rigidity across the width. The steel cords give the belt its strength and its ability to have long unsupported vertical lengths.

Due to the lengths of these belts and the potential for a catastrophic failure, only a qualified service company should be used. BMG has installed, respliced and repaired many of these belts, in the Americas and Asia. We would be glad to provide assistance for your repair.

Whatever your decision, you should contact the belt manufacturer for advice and for the proper splicing/repair materials as the cross rigid metal mesh is an important consideration in any repair and is usually available only from the manufacturer.

we contacted the manufacturer and they will be coming to assit us with the belt. the most feasible option right now is to change about 50 m of belt..

currently the belt is still running with a patch of ep 1000/4 belt cliped to the steel cord belt .. but this is monitored daily and lasts for about 5 to 6 days.
