Look at type of belt construction and necessary safety factor you wish to apply. By example:
Assume Steel Cord Belt that has a standard safety factor = 6.7:1
Steel cord is rated in ST- xxxx N/mm. This is the breaking strength of steel cords/ mm.
Assume Steel Cord rating is ST-1000 N/mm breaking strength
Then working strength is St-1000 N/mm / SF=6.7 = 149.25 N/mm working strength
We know PIW is ("Pounds per Inch of Width") a working tension per unit width.
Then we convert metric to English for ST-1000 N/mm to 852 PIW:
ST-1000 / 6.7 = 149.25 N/mm x ( 1 P/4.448 N) x (25.4 mm / 1 inch) = 852 PIW or 852 pounds/inch.
I hope. ■

Conversion between PIW and N/mm
Dear all:
I found A lot of data are introduce that the belts tension 450PIW equal to 800 N/mm in china.
I know that the PIW = Pound per inch of width of the belt,
the N/mm = N per millimeter of width of the belt,
but I always conversion is not accurate
I want to know how to conversion between PIW and N/mm,Thank you very much. ■
