Belt Breaking Strength - Longitudinal Vs Transverse

Posted in: , on 16. Oct. 2011 - 22:00

Dear Experts,

The full thickness belt breaking strength in fabric belts in Transverse Direction is 40% of the Longitudinal Direction.

What is the importance of belt breaking strength in Transverse Direction? If this value is added or reduced what would be the impact on the belt?

By increasing, can we improve the belts tear resistance?

Thanks & reagrds to all,

Transverse fabric belt strength provides:

1. Belt Troughing Support to maintain sufficient belt structure to span between idler spacing, idler trough angle, belt width, and lump size to keep the belt from degrading due to invoked stress and strain.

2. Impact Support at loading station to absorb the large lump kinetic energy applied in the transfer station where the transverse reinforcement takes a similar load to the longitudinal fibers.

3. Belt reinforcement must also accomodate the pulley material buildup without fibers flexing to failure under the distorted shape anomalies from material buildup.

4. Ripstop layer of fabric can enhance puncture device expulsion from the belt. See manufacturers' claims on rip protective layers.

If the transverse fibers did not exist, such as with steel cord construction, the rubber and fabric adhesion would undergoe excessive stress that would lead to debonding between longitudinal fibers. Transverse reinforcement layers are added to steel cord belt where there is insufficient transverse reinforcement due to large lump impact or large pulley build-up from material entrapment that the client demands operating belt failure protection methods.

Dear Shri Ganesh,

Reply from Mr. Nordell, covers almost all the points.

As for the general information, the belt manufacturers also provide the belt transverse strength information while buying the belt or on request. It can be presumed that the belt transverse strength parameters fixed by the belt manufacturers, must have been done after extensive investigation so as to get the optimum situation for wide ranging suitability. So generally, buyer hardly tells to amend the features of the weft in the fabric, unless he himself is an expert about the belt construction.
