Lafarge Cement Unveils Unique Web-Based Silo Monitoring System provided by DEDICATEDengines

Lafarge Cement has developed an innovative silo monitoring system to help its bulk cement customers keep track of their cement stocks over the internet.

The unique management facility automatically monitors and replenishes cement supplies providing a solution to the industry-wide challenge of under- and over-stocking. The system is being rolled out to customers nationwide from spring 2007 and presents a first for the industry. Developed in partnership with Dedicatedengines Limited over the last three years, a sensor checks the amount of cement stored in single or multiple silos and transmits this information to a secure server at pre-determined intervals. Cement levels are kept under constant review, and when cement falls to a pre-set level, an alert is automatically sent to Lafarge, which in turns arranges immediate delivery of stocks. Mike Lomax, marketing communications manager, Lafarge Cement UK, comments: "This ingenious and proven piece of technology is going to prove a real time-saver to our bulk cement customers. We developed it in response to comments about the complications of having to individually monitor and reorder bulk cement particularly where it is often so difficult for our customers to actually see how much cement is stored in their silo. The automatic monitoring not only means no more last-minute phone calls, it removes the work of planning future deliveries and ensures cement stocks are properly managed and significantly reduces the risk of being caught short!" This innovation is another in a line of systems being developed by Lafarge Cement as part of its sustainability drive. By optimising cement stock levels Lafarge Cement is minimising risk of wastage and ensuring efficient delivery schedules although where possible, deliveries are made off-peak to minimise costs and road congestion. Mike continues: "The web interface also means that our customers can view their stock levels from any location increasing flexibility, particularly if they have several silos or are working across numerous sites. We're confident that the removal of hassle, worry, cost and risk is going to make this system a popular choice, and we're pleased to be the first to introduce it."
