Malvern introduces two new online particle size analyzers at ACHEMA 2006

Malvern Liquid Process Sizer (LPS) for continuous wet particle size measurement Malvern Insitec D for use in hazardous areas

At ACHEMA 2006 (15-19 May 2006; Frankfurt, Germany) Malvern Instruments will introduce two new online particle size analyzers. The Malvern LPS (Liquid Process Sizer) provides a complete solution for continuous measurement in liquid streams while the Malvern Insitec D is a fully integrated on-line particle size measurement solution designed for use in environments where there is the potential for dust explosions. At the heart of both systems is Malvern’s proven and industrially rugged Insitec laser diffraction-based particle size analyzer technology.

The Malvern LPS is designed for continuous industrial use at- or on-line. It can accurately and reproducibly measure a very wide range of process streams, from highly concentrated mineral slurries through to lipid emulsions. Each component of the system – sampler, pre-diluter, cascade diluter, measurement cell, and software – can be individually tailored to the process, ensuring that even the most challenging applications can be tackled effectively.

The LPS sampler extracts 2.5 ml liquid slugs from the full pipe section. There is never any cessation of sample flow, thus avoiding blockages. The process interface is designed for high pressure (where necessary) and for easy installation and maintenance. The system’s pre-diluter and cascade diluter work together to bring the sample to an optimal concentration for analysis whilst avoiding dilution shock. These components have few moving parts, are self-cleaning and are designed to minimize diluent consumption. Consistent dilution is achieved efficiently with no manual intervention.

The new Malvern Insitec D is a fully integrated on-line particle size measurement solution for use in environments where there is the potential for dust explosions. It has both NEC500 and ATEX approval and is an ideal choice for manufacturers seeking a highly reliable, continuous particle size analyzer that complies fully with the ATEX 137 Worker Protection Directive 1992/92/EC.

The ATEX 137 Worker Protection Directive 1992/92/EC, which became mandatory in July 2003, requires that new equipment for use in potentially hazardous environments is ATEX approved. Dust explosion protection falls under the directive, and zones analogous to those that are already well established for gas explosion, are defined. The Insitec D is designed for use in Zone 22 areas - those where a hazardous explosive atmosphere would only be expected to occur fleetingly, or as the result of abnormal operation.

To meet the requirements for ATEX approval, the Insitec D has a limited maximum equipment temperature. Captive connectors and enclosures are also used to ensure system integrity.

NOTE: In addition, Malvern systems for laboratory based applications will be shown at ACHEMA 2006 on Stand No: 5.1 B42-C44
