LIEBHERR floating cranes type CBG 25/30 prove their reliability in the Kerch Straits, Ukraine

Efficiency and flexibility are key factors in bulk handling and transshipment times must be kept to a minimum in order to remain competitive in today’s markets. Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH provides a full range of floating cranes for installation on barges and transshippers providing tailor-made solutions for all requirements, whether in open sea or sheltered waters.

Following the imposing performance of its two Liebherr floating cranes in the Kerch Straits, the Odessa-based cargo forwarding specialist Transship Ltd., has placed the order for a third crane type FCC CBG 25/30 for installation on its barge “Atlas-5”.

Transship Ltd. provides board to board and ship to ship transhipment of grains (wheat and barley), sulphur, ore, coal and different types of urea usually on Handysize and Panamax vessels. The barges “Atlas-1” and “Atlas-4” are fitted with Liebherr’s dedi-cated high performance bulk handling crane type FCC CBG 25/30 Litronic® and can load/unload vessels even up to Capesize.

The Liebherr FCC CBG 25/30 Litronic® has a maximum lifting capacity of 25 tonnes in grab operation with a jib outreach of 30 metres. This outreach is extended through an ex-centre arm of 10 m and 6 m respectively, making a total outreach of 40 m and 36 m. A major advantage of the arm lies in the positioning of the cranes during lifting and discharging of cargo. Due to the extended outreach it is not necessary to reposition the crane to reach all holds during unloading, and the cycle can be reduced by approx. 20% in comparison to conventional cranes. Much to the satisfaction of Transship Ltd. the barges “Atlas-1” and “Atlas-4” equipped with Liebherr floating cranes can transship approx. 600-800 thousand tonnes of cargo each within a navigation period of 200 days. During the peak season for grain each crane transhipped approx. 200,000 tonnes of grain per month, limited only by the lack of barges and not crane turnover.

The Liebherr FCC CBG Litronic® range of four-rope grab cranes is designed for high speed and continuous performance. All three motions can be operated simultaneously at full speed and the special crane geometry allows for a horizontal load path in luffing operation. A wide rope field for stabilising the grab ensures safe operation and cargo handling without the need of an additional stabilizing winch. Specially designed heavy duty hoisting winches, heel trim alarm systems and emergency operation functions make these cranes suitable for operation in heavy sea state condition. According to Transship Ltd., the two barges fitted with Liebherr FCC CBG floating cranes are conclu-sively better adjusted to bad weather conditions than other floating cranes. During the recent bad weather and rough sea conditions in the Kerch Straits both FCC CBG cranes stood up to 2.5 m wave heights and work was indeed stopped at the request of the vessel master due to fear of damage to vessel by wind or waves. The performance of the cranes was not affected.

Precision and safety are of utmost importance and are supported by Liebherr’s own Litronic® crane control and management system. This system controls the simultane-ous operation of crane motions (luffing, hoisting and slewing), so ensuring best possible performance and protection for the crane. The control system records data about all individual components in load collectives, all alarm signals and failures as well as peak values. The lifetime of components can thus be analysed and plans for preventative maintenance and spare parts supply can be established. Relevant values such as load indication/limitation, operation mode, etc. are displayed on the LCD monitor in the cabin. The cabin itself is ergonomically designed for the comfort of the operator and the all-round glazing ensures a high level of visibility. This is even further improved thanks to a 3 m cabin extension enabling full view of the working area on the barges and vessels not only ensuring higher safety during operation but also more efficient grab handling.

To complement the support of Liebherr’s world-wide service network, these FCC CBG cranes are equipped with a modem for data-transfer enabling remote diagnosis. This allows for system checks as well as fault-finding which can cost-effectively be carried out without the presence of a service engineer.

The combination of over forty years of experience in maritime cargo handling, latest technologies and highest quality standards guarantees innovative and efficient solutions from Liebherr.
