Successful season for floating crane “Atlas-1”

The Liebherr floating cargo crane type CBG 25/30 mounted on an ex-centre platform has exceeded the owner’s expectations and successfully completed its first season in the Kerch Strait/Ukraine, where it trans-ships coal, sulphur and grain between Volga-Don river barges and PANAMAX size vessels.

For the first time Liebherr has installed its dedicated high performance bulk handling crane type CBG 25/30 Litronic® on a 10 m ex-centre arm and in doing so has fully satisfied the owner’s demand for heavy duty offshore transshipment. The advantages are numerous and are summarised as follows:

Installed on the 10 m ex-centre arm, the crane achieves an outreach of up to 40 m, allowing increased flexibility for unloading PANAMAX size vessels as the crane covers three cargo holds without it being necessary to reposition the crane barge.

The positioning of the crane, with its 7.5 m cabin extension, alongside the vessel, ensures high safety during operation as well as efficient grab handling due to the driver’s improved visibility of the whole working area. Moreover, this configuration on the 10m arm allows shortening of the boom to 30 m, which significantly reduces swinging of the grab and consequently increases the productivity in transshipment operation with up to 40 cycles per hour.

The floating crane has been certified according to LRS (LIoyd`s Register of Shipping).

Liebherr offers specific offshore options including specially designed heavy duty hoisting winches, a strengthened boom, heel trim alarm systems and emergency operation functions. These options allow crane operation under heavy sea state conditions with wave heights up to 2.5 m and so facilitates the utility of the crane barge “Atlas-1” under conditions which may not otherwise be possible and so ensures efficient and uninterrupted transshipment of the goods.

With a max. lifting capacity of 25 t in grab operation at 30 m working radius (plus 10 m ex-centre arm) the crane achieves an average turnover of 750 t/h at calm sea and approximately 600 t/h under heavy sea state conditions. Transship Ltd uses bulldozers and wheel loaders to clear up the vessels and these can be lifted into the vessel by the Liebherr CBG 25/30 in hook operation (max. lifting capacity of 30 t up to 26 m working radius).

As a result of the successful operation of crane barge “Atlas-1” and the outstanding performance of the Liebherr floating cargo crane type CBG 25/30 the Odessa-based Ukrainian owner and cargo forwarding specialist Transship Ltd, has placed a second order, namely for the new crane barge “Atlas-2”, which will commence operation in early summer 2006.

In addition to the above mentioned floating cargo crane Liebherr offers an extensive range of specialised bulk handling machines for barge or port use starting with wheel loaders, through heavy duty slewing type cranes up to double-girder offshore cranes such as the MPG 45/38.
